zomg the IT guys here are sharp...

I can't use any chat...so I went to meebo, but that was blocked. I was like " well let me use verticalimits instead!"...that was blocked :x Even chat in gmail is blocked! Zomg there guys are intense (not to mention that they already know to block every other site like facebook!)

But they didn't block the site i use the most xD (although knowing them...they'll probably read this! Hello! Don't worry, I'm still productive!)

I was pleasantly surprised when I arrived at my current company they allow most everything.

The only stuff they block is mandated by our parent company, the local IT group takes a pretty much hands off approach.

Their exact words were:

If people want to risk their $50,000 a year job surfing porn, so be it.

Viper GTS

my IT set up a proxy to block our access....but didnt lock any of the machines down, so i disabled the proxy and surf all day mmmmmmm 🙂

Sounds like a pretty good policy to me.

It's really the only aceptable policy.
I've seen some IT dept zealots who take it upon themselves to become HR and proceed to institute restrictive policies for the employee's own good.

bloody fascists 😛

They don't block anything at my work but of course logs will show up if one is going to bad sites.

I just play it safe anyways, but since I'm in IT I have a little less to worry about than others 😛.

"IT guys" who know what they're don't have everything enabled with a specific block list, they have everything DISABLED with a specific allowed list.

That's only true if you're non-union.

We block a lot of sites here at our company. Wal-Mart.com is even blocked from so many people hitting that website throughout the day lol. We just unblocked ESPN Fantasy Football so we can get a league going 🙂.

Did you field workers know that us office folk often have downtime, breaks, lunches, and other reasons to browse the web. Not all companies have policies against using the internet at work, so long as you get your work done.

Nothing blocked here. Blocking a developer based on any type of standard blacklist or web monitoring software would completely kill their productivity.

Often blocking stuff isn't just to make people not look at pron ....

Blocking stuff is to protect the network.
It helps keep out malware of all sorts.

Thus, it makes life easier for the desktop support folks.

Where I work they have pretty much everything open for us, but we are IT, and we do legitimately use the web for ksh, perl, sql, pl/sql, c, bash, and various other documentation from time to time ... As well as some possibly less legit places, such as this fine web forum ... hehehehe

Here is your box, there is the door. Security Guard_00 will watch you pack and walk you out...don't let the door hit 'cha

Also realize that draconian IT policies result from a couple of things.

Abuse is the big one...blame the turd that sits next to you and surfed every day for 8 hours.

HR/Liability. They tell us, we just enforce.
