We'll see how this goes.
The new "pick a fight gives you the right" (to kill) law.
Just imagine all the """OTHER""" wack-o's dusting off their guns tonight getting all pumped for tomorrows new world of upside down justice.
Im just glad the shooter at Sandy Hook or the Aurora Century 16 cinema shootings didn't have same "stand your ground" law to use as a free get out of jail pass.
"Oooh, those children looked scary. I was in danger."
"Oooh, that movie looked scary. I was in danger."

I still say that if Martin had used a gun and shot "that creepy guy" following him first, Martin would have been home free just like Zimmerman.

The fact Zimmerman killed a kid doesn't seem to bother him one bit.
He smiled, and looked quite content at his jury supplied freebie to kill pass.
Id think most moral decent people would still realize someone is dead out of all this.
Not Zimmerman. Sure seems like just another day, to him.

So the moral here? Pack and shoot first, making darn sure to kill.
Remembering that dead men (and children) tell no tales.

You didn't watch the trial did you? Because if you did you'd know that your comments are completely out of synch with the way things happened.

People on your side want to make it sound like GZ was out hunting wabbits (re: black people).

The reality is, while on a neighborhood watch patrol, GZ saw someone who looked out of place and stopped to check it out. He followed TM. So what? TM could have walked away. He could have turned around and said 'Hey, you creepy ass cracker... why are you following me?' TM could have called the police instead of his semi-illiterate GF. But instead he hid himself away and ambushed GZ.

At that point it became a self defense case for GZ and he was never going to be convicted. End of story. Sad that someone had to die but the deceased didn't have to initiate the attack.

65% people said YES? wtf? I was expecting 5-10% yes from ATOT.

The landscape is totally different than 20 years ago.

I think comparing what he did to sandy hook is very reasonable.
🙄

I can't believe the prosecution challenging jurors in closing with "Did Trayvon deserve to die for being armed with 24 ounces of arizona brand iced tea, and a small bag of skittles?" didn't work.

Were all of these women childless? Heartless?

There were reports of smashed windows and fires in Oakland; but that's probably not much different from a typical Saturday night there so I don't know if you can call that a riot.

In a classless move, Don West refused to shake the prosecutors hand after the reading of the verdict,(typical professional protocol) AND HE WON!. I felt the prosecution failed in closing to again direct the attention of the jury to the simple fact that TM's dead body was nowhere near the concrete walkway were GZ supposedly was under vicious attack, the facts didn't add up for me here, not at all.

Seriously?!

Any vids or gif links of this? Everything was on camera- I just want to see it. Amazing if true, especially since he was on the winning side (easier to be a "good sport" when your team wins). That guy didn't even look like he wanted to shake his own client's hand. He hesitated way too long at one point yesterday. Maybe he's just not a shaker? Still.

Re: the prosecution, it's unfortunate how murderers can appeal verdicts for having incompetent defense attorneys, among other reasons, yet victims/families can't appeal for the people having incompetent representation. #justiceforbabytraytray #thisisnotover

was wondering why this was an espn link this morning, then saw these gems

More athlete reaction followed Saturday night via Twitter. Among the most controversial tweets came from New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz, who wrote "Zimmerman doesn't last a year til the hood catches up to him." The tweet was later deleted.

Roddy White ✔ @roddywhiteTV

All them jurors should go home tonight and kill themselves for letting a grown man get away with killing a kid

Indeed, the federal government in fact encourages it. It is the essence of "If you see something, say something." Implicit in that is not "If you see somebody wiring a bomb", but rather if you see something suspicious, which is, according to the definition in the GZ case, profiling--somebody acting in a way you think is not on the up and up.

Which was perfectly fine.

Whats not fine is chasing someone down when you are only the neighborhood watch.
And look what fuckin happened....

why hashtags on AT?

It's over anyway, you can't prosecute a person twice for the same crime in any case in the US afaik (in other countries the appeal court can just say there were flaws and do it again) so there's nothing to be done.

There is no law on the books that says you cannot check out someone suspicious in hopes that you keep your neighbors homes safe from intruders. Watching someone in public is no crime.

You say chasing someone down, The facts say Investigating a potentially suspicious person in a gated community who may not belong there and you do not recognize.

This.

What isthe penalty for following?

I would like some ATers to answer this:
If I go outside and follow someone for a half hour, how much jail time should I serve? What's the fine? Should there be any penalty at all?

Please, please, PLEASE stop referring to this 17-year-old young man as a "baby" or "child." This started because the media only shows a picture of Trayvon when he was an adorable 12-year-old.

I clicked no because I made a random assumption that race relations in Florida are not that bad

if the shooting & trial took place in or around Oakland, Chicago, or Detroit, I'd be jamming the yes button

hm.. forgot FL is made of old white people

but if the shooting took place in Oakland, Chicago, or Detroit, would this make news?

It wouldn't have made the news, and it wouldn't lead to riots either. Shit like this happens all the time in those areas, yet the people don't rush out and riot. If black people rioted when there was what they believed to be injustice served against them there would be out tearing up the city once a week.

White paranoia and racial prejudice has them going "ZOMG LA RIOTS ALL OVER AGAIN!" Every time any case similar to this comes up. Forget the fact there haven't been riots in LA since the Rodney King verdict.

A black girl was asleep in her car and 5 cops shot up the car and killed her in the black part of my town. Trial happened, all cops involved were found not guilty. Al Sharpton came and spoke, the black people had what amounted to a peaceful protest. Didn't stop my paranoid white neighbor from loading up on buck shot though.
