Computerbase.de were present¹ at the Advancing AI event. According to their report, Verano is the 7th-generation EPYC, but whether it is built around a Zen 7 microarchitecture or a variant of the Zen 6 microarchitecture was not discussed by AMD on the event.

Just as we don't know whether or not AMD will be using the name "Zen 7" for the microarchitecture of the 7th generation EPYC, we don't know whether it is going to be a minor or major update, how long it has been in the works by now, and what the progress rate of this project has been so far.

Wonder if there's a Zen 6+ in the works? I mean I can see N2P Zen 6>A16 Zen 6+ >A14 Zen 7 on AM6?

I mean AM5 effectively had 4 gens for Consumers with Zen+, wouldn't suprise me to see A16 being used for a Zen 6+ to recreate a sense of longevity for AM4 had for AM5 and to compete against RZL like Zen 6 Vs NVL?

The big ? is if Zen 7 will either be a on AM5 or AM6, if there is a Zen 6+ then kinda makes sense if Zen 7 is on AM6.

Apart from this not really being disputed just because of German(-ish) being spoken in some valleys around there, there is another Verano next to Piacenza 😉

Some hypotheses:
  • An intern mistyped Verona in Powerpoint. When on stage, the CEO went along with it.
  • The codename has been Verano all along. When it was dropped in talks over a beer at the pub, one listener mistook it as Verona, another as Murano. It was rather noisy at the pub, or/and the beer was pretty good.
  • While the true codename was Verano, innermost circles at AMD placed the additional fake names Verona and Murano, in order to watch where these ones were turning up again in public. By now, hired guns are on their way to plug the leaks.
