If I had to build a system now it would be Raptor Lake based. Not only are the CPUs much more cheaper, the AM5 motherboards are just ridiculously priced at the moment. X670 based boards are just too pricey.

It will be disassembled since I'm not building an entirely new system. RAM, video card, storage, and power supply will carry over.
How do you minimize the pain of Windows/applications re-install? Dissimilar hardware restore from image?

If you're lazy you could still run your twice or thrice upgraded W7 install from 2009 across multiple AMD and Intel builds.

I've seen several mention that they are bummed about the current availability of 64GB kits. What type of workloads do you have that warrant this or is it simply to be ahead of the game? I'm genuinely curious as my current gaming/photo PC has 24GB and that seems to be OK (granted it is a much older platform).

Not much more price wise then AMD 7000 series! The new Raptor Lake board should be more in general!

Looking 2+ years ahead on this platform, having run 32GB for I don't know, almost 10 years, yeah I want that headroom.

my concern with going brand new Raptor lake is there will be no more upgrades for that socket. Where as AM5 is just starting its life and you will see Zen 5 on it and maybe Zen 6.

Boot from Windows 11 USB Stick, install Windows 11. Download/install chipset/video/sound drivers, reboot. Download Steam for gaming. Enable WSL2 for development. Download automated install script for WSL2 and run it to set up dev environment. Install the few applications I need outside of that (windows store has made this process a bit easier). Takes me maybe 30 minutes to an hour. Most of my settings are synced remotely.

I do software development, 3D rendering, video editing and encoding, and gaming. I've actually run out of RAM a few times with 32GB, so I'm doubling up (hopefully) for my new build.

No guarantees on Zen 5 FYI,

WOW, glad I got up early and got these. ebay has them way over MSRP, AMD is out, and Amazon is over MSRP.

They went fast !
The Columbus Micro Center I went to earlier today still shows 25+ in stock for the 7950x

Most people are not concerned or really interested in Raptor Lake. Intel 7nm silicon is where AMD should be concerned. AMD had a really good run for the last 5 years. I am not saying it's over. With that said, Zen 5 should be on the 3nm (maybe 4nm) silicon from TSMC. AMD needs a big IPC increase for Zen 5.

True 7nm silicon from Intel (Intel 4) means that Intel can take on AMD with a core war and much better power efficiency.

That will be a concern for the future for right now this fall/winter season looks to be one of the best building seasons in a very long time if one has the budget. We are getting both new Cpu's and Gpu in this time span and looks like both sides have competitive products. Looking forward to seeing more builds from those in the forums.

Leave it to ASUS to drop the ball. Mini-ITX Motherboard pre-order delayed to 10/7.

If Zen 5 is coming out in 2024 and AMD said the socket is 2025+ that is pretty good guarantee.

Unless they are planning a new socket in 2024 which would be the opposite of what was said.

And considering their previous track record with AM4 I'm inclined to believe them.

AMD has confirmed nothing about Zen 5, just an FYI. We still have (a minimum) a 3D VCache refresh for Zen 4 and possibly some other shenanigans before a hypothetical Zen 5 product drops.

Note that AM4 is listed as 2022+ as well.

I strongly suspect that enthusiast AM5 won’t live as long as enthusiast AM4.
