Yep, AMD bought ATI to help ATI out. That makes perfect sense. They are not going to use ATI's resources in any way to compete with Intel. In fact they are going to divert their own resources away form their primary business to support ATI in its small profit margin high end graphics business.
I never said that AMD wouldn't use the resources of ATI, that's the whole idea behind buying them out I think. However, AMD have stated many times now that ATI would keep their branding and product ranges too, just under the leadership of AMD.

This is a good thing for both companies. A pooling of resources, practically a doubling of experience in the microprocessor industry, a pooling of designers and engineers.

How can this do anything but strengthen AMD and ATI individually, as well as together?

Seriously, you're wearing green-tinted shades my friend. You're going to be severely disappointed when all this bullcrap you're spreading doesn't ever come to pass.

On the note of the Nvidia CPU thing, another important factor is motherboards. Asus and DFI and Abit would much rather make boards for CPU's as good as AMD's and Intels, not Nvidia's first shot at the CPU. They'd have to intice them with a lot of money, even on top of the amount they would spend on research and develope for the CPU itself.

It is much easier for a CPU company to begin making GPU's than it is for a GPU company to begin making CPU's.

DFI and Abit already make NVIDIA based motherboards. All NVIDIA would have to do is make socket compatible chips (the same thing AMD did back in the day).

However I still think NVIDIA is looking to make a mobile CPU not a desktop\server CPU. Something to power a cell phone or pda or at most an ultra portable laptop.

True, but I was commenting more for in the near future rather than the time being. A lot of those chipsets are on AMD motherboards and if AMD has ATI helping with their own chipsets, they won't need to put money out to implement Nvidia's chipsets.

Truly though, this is far too early to tell. I've just recently chimed in on the G80 speculating because it is so close. To predict the course of the future for complete computer systems, CPU/GPU/Chipset, is a far stretch. We'll have to just sit back and enjoy some 16xAA@34fps in FEAR for the meantime ;)

Do you work for Nvidia? How do you know this?

This sounds like insider information to me, because I don't think any of us have heard what Nvidia's long term plans are.

I'd love a quarter for every time I've heard a fanatic/3dfx zealot bleat that line out over the years...

i'd take a nickel for every time you dispel fanatic FUD ;)

i'd have xfired xtxes and core2 by now.
:Q

looks like you are getting a little worried :p

:D

Fixed it for you ;)

Why would I be worried? there's no competition left...

you still don't get it

AMD bought ATI for its strengths . . . AMD is going into the gfx business - big time . . . integrated and high end

it helps to have the performance crown if you are in the GFX business as AMD is well aware . . .
... and as you seem so UNaware - in contrast.

AMD bought ATi for its chipsets & low power experience. The fact that there was an abundance of trained silicon engineers that could be diverted to the war against intel didn't hurt either.

Tried reading their investor conference call transcripts lately?

No but I did read this, which says the Radeon product line is going nowhere.

As I keep saying to you and your FUDdite kin; The more you convince yourselves that ATI are pulling from the graphics card market with your wishful thinking, the more disappointed you will be when it never comes to pass.

THE chief technology officers of AMD and ATI challenged each other to a hot curry fight in London last night but the real winner was on-looker ATI man Richard Huddy whose meal of scallops was so spicy it took his breath away.
The occasion, held at a curry emporium not far from Tony Blair's house was for a few online hacks to meet Phil Hester, chief tech officer of AMD, and Bob Drebin, ATI's CTO.

And why the curry challenge? Phil Hester's passion is growing peppers. Red peppers, green peppers, jalapeno peppers, chilli peppers - mirch of every kind. . . .

We took the opportunity to ask Mr Hester some questions about AMD and ATI. While he said AMD didn't speculate about what companies it might take over in the future, he said that the firm was always looking for opportunities. He wasn't able to comment on SGI suing ATI for an alleged breach of patents because he's been on the go all week and most of yesterday.

He was interesting about the rumours that Nvidia is looking at creating a CPU. He said that AMD had looked for some time at spreading its wings into the graphics arena, but concluded that it was better to approach a firm like ATI which had immense expertise in that marketplace. He said that the only rational way to approach that market was to take that approach.

The idea of having graphics and CPU in one die is not, of course, new. In fact, back in the early 1990s, Intel had proposed a design for the end of the decade which would have such features, although that never came about.

He said that if you looked at the graphics and CPU market for PCs, there had been five to 10 companies which tried to enter the GPU business and the same sort of number attempted entry into the CPU business too. But that has consolidated into two or three firms in both sectors which suited AMD customers very well. A monopoly didn't suit PC manufacturers, who like to be able to choose which components they use and play the price and performance game.

It's too early to say how AMD's acquisition of ATI will shake out, said Hester, but there were unlikely to be too many redundancies. It continued to be a partner and to work with Nvidia and it was likely that AMD will continue to use the ATI brand in the AMD portfolio, however that eventually shakes out. .. . .

What a pity Huddy's meal didn't take his breath away permanently....

Did you just wish that somebody died purely because they work for a company you don't like?

There's being a drooling, idiot fanboy but then there's being psychotic.

Perhaps you should read up on Mr. Huddy - he's ex nvidia & the person lurking behind ATi's PR. It's little wonder nvidia's PR has improved and ATi's worsened since he moved companies...

I really couldn't care less about what the guy's job is, where his loyalties may lie, or if he if good or bad at his job. Wishing death on him is crossing a line into worrying territority.
