Yeah, but they don't actually have a lot of employees in CA. Intel has Fabs in Portland, Chandler, Ireland, Isreal, etc.., and AMD's fabs were in Texas and now Dresden and New York. I'm not to sure why a lot of companies still have headquarters in Silicon Valley, as the cost of living makes it hard to attract employees. I work in the Fab industry and no a lot of people who worked in Silicon Valley but had to leave to be able to buy a house.

I honestly don't care what you think josh. Your precious ATi is no more and nvidia is stronger than ever despite the best efforts of the fanatics, and none of your rants will change that one iota.
That's a paradox. It can't be "my precious ATi" if it is "no more".

Besides, I'm not the one constantly researching the companies. I check the stock at Newegg more than I check Nvidia's stock. ;)
Nvidia at work on combined CPU with graphic - On 65nm in 2008

by doing this they will turn all the major CPU players - intel/amd maybe even ibm against them . . . who wants to help nvidia aggressively compete with them?

intel/amd hold all the x86 patents

expect nvidia to get shut down . . . hard
Ewww.......

Nvidia plans to go against Intel, DAMIT, and possibly IBM as well?

Suicide.....

EDIT:

On the note of colors, it looks like Nvidia is going red and ATI went green.

LOL! I'll let you debate that one with Gollum/Smeagol who most assuredly considered the ring his precious even when he didn't have it, right up to when he got unmade with it.

What a pity the fanatics didn't get unmade when Ati ceased to exist.

Gstanfor, focus. It's a company. You can't go wearing a company around nor even touch it.

If you want to get into the whole "precious" analysis, it wasn't the ring he was yearning for but rather what it represented, but that's an entirely different subject.
What a pity the fanatics didn't get unmade when Ati ceased to exist.
I get it!! "G" stands for "Gandalf" right?!?!?

The green may indeed be pukey but overall the design seems less garish. However, 'tis all cosmetic anyway and more importantly the number of clicks to get the lastest friggin' drivers remains too many. It's a click too far (queue theme song from "A Bridge Too Far")!

Can't believe some of the idiots on here.

Listening to the crap Gstanfor comes out with would actually stop me buying future Nvidia products.

I don't want to be associated with a company that has such a fvcking tool as its no.1 fan.

If I followed that logic I would never be able to buy computer components, consoles, video games, TVs, etc. :p

Just be grateful that all these idiots do is spend money on the product, they have no say in the great scheme of things about how the company acts or what improvements are made to the product.

theInq did some schmoozing with the ATi/AMD guys and there is a lot of interesting tidbits in this weird article:

THE chief technology officers of AMD and ATI challenged each other to a hot curry fight in London last night but the real winner was on-looker ATI man Richard Huddy whose meal of scallops was so spicy it took his breath away.
The occasion, held at a curry emporium not far from Tony Blair's house was for a few online hacks to meet Phil Hester, chief tech officer of AMD, and Bob Drebin, ATI's CTO.

And why the curry challenge? Phil Hester's passion is growing peppers. Red peppers, green peppers, jalapeno peppers, chilli peppers - mirch of every kind. . . .

We took the opportunity to ask Mr Hester some questions about AMD and ATI. While he said AMD didn't speculate about what companies it might take over in the future, he said that the firm was always looking for opportunities. He wasn't able to comment on SGI suing ATI for an alleged breach of patents because he's been on the go all week and most of yesterday.

He was interesting about the rumours that Nvidia is looking at creating a CPU. He said that AMD had looked for some time at spreading its wings into the graphics arena, but concluded that it was better to approach a firm like ATI which had immense expertise in that marketplace. He said that the only rational way to approach that market was to take that approach.

The idea of having graphics and CPU in one die is not, of course, new. In fact, back in the early 1990s, Intel had proposed a design for the end of the decade which would have such features, although that never came about.

He said that if you looked at the graphics and CPU market for PCs, there had been five to 10 companies which tried to enter the GPU business and the same sort of number attempted entry into the CPU business too. But that has consolidated into two or three firms in both sectors which suited AMD customers very well. A monopoly didn't suit PC manufacturers, who like to be able to choose which components they use and play the price and performance game.

It's too early to say how AMD's acquisition of ATI will shake out, said Hester, but there were unlikely to be too many redundancies. It continued to be a partner and to work with Nvidia and it was likely that AMD will continue to use the ATI brand in the AMD portfolio, however that eventually shakes out. .. . .

Well with no competition for them in the video card market, they had to look else where for a challenge. Maybe in a few years NVIDIA will buy AMD.

more likely . . . AMD and intel will string them along with selling some patents . . . and then shut nvidia down completely when they try to actually complete their cpu.

nvidia will run out of cash and will probably be picked up cheap in a fire sale

Well Intel already owns some stock in NVIDIA. So using your logic. Intel and NVIDIA will bury AMD now that they are weakened by the ATI purchase. AMD will run out of cash and be picked up cheap by NVIDIA in a fire sale.

no . . . you just don't get it

nvidia MUST make - is making - a cpu .. . . to stay competitive in the future

still with me?

nvidia NEEDS patents that intel/amd hold to make a cpu [ok?]

... do you really think they are gonna accept some cash now to enable a brutal and aggressive competitor to destroy them later?

[well do you?]

amd and intel may be a lot of things . . . but they are not stupid

it looks like nvidia will hit a dead end

[logic is on my side . . . wishful fantasy on yours]

I know you are upset that ATI is gone. Don't be hatin' on NVIDIA for that. Soon (like creative, microsoft, etc.), NVIDIA will be the only player in its field (high end grahpics). So it does not "need" to make a CPU. I would bet their only interest in a CPU would be for mobile applications as NVIDIA makes plenty of money making chipsets for both AMD & Intel. Go mourn your loss in silence.

Gone where? According to AMD the ATI brand and Radeon product family isn't going anywhere.

http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=3719

I know you fanboys are wishing ATI was dead, but it's just not the case. Sorry.

Don't lose sleep over this or anything.

There is a big difference between a brand name and a company. As a company ATI is gone. Type in "www.ati.com" and see what happens. I am not happy about this at all. The competition was good for us as consumers. However, I bet my predictions will come through as it makes the most sense.

Hahaha, but that's not what you said. You said that soon Nvidia will be the "only player" in the high-end graphics industry and 'tards like Gstanfor and Crusader seem to think that ATI are not going to be making graphics cards at all anymore.

This just isn't true, read the damn article. The Radeon product family (you know, graphics cards?) is going nowhere.

Don't lose too much sleep over the fact that ATI will continue doing what they've done for years, but from now on with the resources of AMD at their disposal and drawing on their strong leadership and expertise. ;)

no sense whatsoever

you get Ati.amd.com

AMD+ATi = the New AMD

pretty clear

a new AMD with a high powered graphics division to take on intel . . . and nvidia

ATi as a separate company or as a division of AMD will compete better in CPUs, GPUS and chipsets.

Yep, AMD bought ATI to help ATI out. That makes perfect sense. They are not going to use ATI's resources in any way to compete with Intel. In fact they are going to divert their own resources away form their primary business to support ATI in its small profit margin high end graphics business.

you still don't get it

AMD bought ATI for its strengths . . . AMD is going into the gfx business - big time . . . integrated and high end

it helps to have the performance crown if you are in the GFX business as AMD is well aware . . .
... and as you seem so UNaware - in contrast.
