Back in 1990 through work. We could dial in at up to 2400 baud. I could only afford a 300 baud modem. Scrolling text in message boards and chat rooms, BABY!!

First was early 90's, 1992 or so on a Mac. I would call into a BBS type system. I used it some, but not too much. Around 95 I used my 14.4 modem to dial into my college unix shell account. I had lynx and gopher access, but soon discovered a graphical browser called IComm which used Z modem to download images. After that I discovered twinsock and later virtual TCP. I then could use Mosaic and netscape, but not IE(which was junk anyway back then). In 96 I finally decided to pay for net access from a local ISP.

14.4 modem, AOL from 1995. I remember asing my Dad why we didn't get the 28.8 one. He answered, "The Internet? Oh, that'll never catch on..."

Hacked into a scientific research place via modem in 1992 and used their Internet connection to go on IRC 😉 The statute of limitations is long past 😛

in 93 on 14.4 modem i think or was it 28. I used cc maker and created an account with some small internet company and was able to get it cc number and not have to pay for it

My first internet connection was via FIDONet on BBS's back in around 95 or 96, but it was only Internet email, but I think I connected at 14.4 or 28.8 at that point.

Eventually I got a Internet connection around 96 or 97, UNIX shell account for doing stuff like IRC and if I needed quick web access it was through lynx.
For 'normal' web browsing (with Netscape 1.0 and Mosaic, and then later Netscape 2.0!), I was on 28.8 and I was using a UNIX shell account through a local BBS with slirp running on the unix end and some SLIP connection. I had a DOS terminal emulator (Qmodem) that I started up the slirp app from, and then had to quickly exit out of Qmodem and load up Windows 3.11 so I could start the SLIP client. Haha, those were the days! 🙂

2400 baud modem to dial into library internet access. That was shaweet back in '93-'94.

You dialed up local BBSes? Was that here in Portland? Which BBSes were you on?

Since he said internet, I didn't count my BBSing days. I first logged onto the local BBS scene on an IBM XT with a 2400baud modem. 😉

4.77MHz, baby!
