younger sisters want cell phones

I got my 18 year old sister a laptop for her graduation gift and now a cellphone for college. My 14 year old sister also wants a cellphone because she just entered high school and said she didn't get anything for her junior high grad gift except for flowers.

Here are my questions:
1) Should the 18 year old pay for her own cellphone plan? Originally I was going to pay for it but I don't want her to just think everything in life comes for free. I want her to cherish her cellphone because she is paying monthly payment on it. It's responsibility that I want her to learn.

edit:
This is a dilemma because I've been paying for my younger brother's cell phone plan for a year. So if I made her pay for it now, she would think it is not fair...

2) Should I get the 14 year old girl a cell phone? Do 14 year olds NEED cellphones? And if she DESPERATELY want one, should I make her pay at least half of the payment just so she would know responsibility too?

For the record, they are good girls who do chores around the house and help out a lot, which is why I don't mind spoiling them. But when is it too much?

I got my cell phone when I got my license. Seems like the appropriate time to get a kid a cellphone.

1. yes
2. yes, but a very basic plan with limited minutes that you pay for. anything over and SHE pays for.

what is IBTP?
guessing "in before the pics" as there are 2 sisters mentioned; universe may or may not implode

Nobody needs a cell phone. If they're good kids and you don't think it'll turn em into spoiled brats, why not. If you want to help them with their cell phone bill then pay half of ther monthly plan, don't pay all of it. Make sure they pay for the rest and any minutes over the plan they use. If they are anything like my sister they will chew through minutes like there is no tomorrow. We have 800 anytime minutes a month. 4 of us use 200 minutes. My sister uses well over 600 minutes.

1)y
2)does she need it? of course not. but if shes a good kid as you describe, maybe a pay as you go or something. that way she can determine how much effort she wants to put into it, and learn cost reward.

nothing wrong with giving a helping hand to your siblings. just be careful not to go too far, or it could get ugly.

I don't think she actually needs a cell phone, but I would say 75% of the kids in my high school have a cell phone including me. If it's a family plan, it really isn't that much more.

18 should pay. 14, go ahead and get her started. She may even be able to learn to shoulder financial responsibility early.

We have a winner. :)

Alternatively I would accept "In Before The Pedo's" since one of the sisters mentioned is 14 :p

Why doesn't she get a job and pay for it herself?

She needs: food, water, home.
She does not need: cellphone, tv, computer, ipod nano.
