i pay my brother's cell phone bill

just put it them all on a family plan that you will pay

but if you go over on the minutes than say you are not going to pay the bill any more

First, I never said anyone was a spoiled brat. What you do with your money I don't care. But I did establish what a person actually needs and doesn't need. Kids have an innate ability to move items from the wants category into the needs category.
 
I bought my younger brother a cell phone when he was 15. 40 dollars a month for unlimited calling. I don't know if they have MetroPCS where you are, but if so its worth looking into.
 
does older sister pay for school? does she have a job? full time school? do your parents want her to have a job while going to school? if it'll be financially hard for her to pay for her cell phone, and she is a good girl, then pay for the bill but set up some rules, like any minutes over the max she has to pay or if she doesn't get good grades, then she has to pay or get it taken away.. something like that.. same with younger sister.. personally i dont' think 14 year olds need cellphones now a days, but you say she's a good girl, may as well reward her for being so

That's a human trait and generally applies regardless of age 😛

It was the "Why doesn't she just get a job" part - unless webcammie has a Nike factory near her, I don't see her 14-year-old sister netting any jobs other than a paper route. 😛

parents pay for school. she works on weekends but doesn't make that much and she goes to school full time.

thanks to all the advice on here, i am going to jut get both my sisters cellphone and pay for them under the condition that they keep their grades up and still help out around the house. =) thanks everyone!

No matter what, don't do anything over pay-as-you-go. Teenage girls want phones because it means they get to talk on the phone a lot more. They will have no sense of roaming, long distance, the expensive cost of overages, text messaging, ringtone downloads, etc.

Sit her down and have a talk with her about responsilibity with the phone.Let her know it can come as easy as it can go, and if/when she goes out with friends, you/your parents BETTER be the first person that gets called to let someone know.

For the record, "graduating" Junior High is an expectation, not a feat.

pay as you go. don't all teenage girls talk alot on the cell phone? you don't want her to rack up a $1000+ bill for overages before it is too late.

i didn't get my cellphone until I hit college. I guess time have changed.

Not a bad idea, as it keeps them from having the idea that they're entitled to a free ride, and keeps them in line 🙂

I would be sure to get a plan that can damage you as little as possible should she go insane.

That plan above, even if she goes nuts, overages are 5 cents a minute instead of 40. Sprint also offers free nights after seven and unlimited text.
 
I think you should hold off.

#1) Realistically, she can't pay for her own plan because you can't even get a workers permit until 16 or so in CA right?

#2) My sister got one around 14 because the School bus was pretty unreliable so my mom gave it to her to to call in case the bus was late. I dunno if that applies to your sister. But I don't think not getting anything for her junior high grad is a good justification.

I think you're doing too much, with your last 2 posts I've read, it seems like you have a lot on your plate in terms of financial obligations. Adding another cell phone bill is another long term commitment and you never know when they're going to go over their minutes (I myself have been guilty of $120+ in high school). Everyone needs to learn the responsibility of doing chores. Sure good behavior should be rewarded, but Im sure you can do it without a cell phone. Still its your money, so in answer to when is it too much? When its out of your means. If you can do all this, and still have some saved for a rainy day, then it should be alright.

EDIT: damn, missed the part where you decided already. oh well.
