I haven't read as much as one post on this thread. When I saw the question, "belt hell" is what came to mind.
My step-father used what ever was in reach from a piece of plastic race track to a garden hose. After I turned 14, it was usually just his fist.
Too bad kids today don't get the kind of discipline I did. We wouldn't have half the ignorant BS going on that we do now.

yeah, I got beat a few times...

Took the belt more times than I can count... stick a few times, even a couples fists...

One time I grabbed my hockey stick, my dad took it from me and made me regret grabbing it :p

dang, i'm surprised at how many people got the belt. I didn't, I got smacked a couple of times, but nothing too bad. I was pretty good though as a kid. I mean I'd fight with my bro and stuff, but I never was out of control to the extent that it truly gave them cause to worry.

When I was young I got whipped because I was unreasonable. When I got older I would only get whipped for seriously bad sh!t. When I reached 13 I no longer got whipped, I would simply be grounded/have stuff taken away.

I turned out pretty well so I will probably use a similair method on my children.

What little I got in trouble it was with a switch/branch(spelling) and sometimes my mom would make me go get it. My dad seldom did anything it was my mom 90% of the time.

My parents had the dog leash. My brothers got hit quite a bit, but I think I can count on one hand how many times I was. To be honest, I deserved it much more than I got it. Probably why I was so fvcked up as a teenager.

I raised VeggieFrog with the 3D rule...

When she was young...no matter what she did wrong (basic screw ups) we would talk about it, and she would get punished. Most kids are sent to their rooms... but in her room, she had a tv, stereo, video games and a library... so her punishment was that she was NOT allowed in her room...

The 3D rule... we will talk about any infraftions of the rules... but if she was

Disobedient
Disrespectful
Defiant

she would get her azz bubbled. My hand, her azz. I started that rule when she was a little girl and it holds true to this day... she is 20yrs old... and will as long as I am alive... she is a very respectful kid and she has gotten hit less than 5 times in her life... last time when she was 16yrs old.

We had just moved to NJ, and she was producing the HS play and wanted to go to to a party afterwards...NP.. she has never really had a curfew, as long as I knew where she was and could ring her cell... she did not have a pocketbook and left the cellphone in a jacket pocket and never heard it ring... well, I had been calling her cell every 15 minutes or so from midnight to 4:15AM.. FRANTIC... she walks in the door at 4:15AM, with a giant slurpee from 711 and when I was yelling at her, she looked at me, REAL sarcastic and said... I dont see what the big deal is and walked away from me...

...we were shampooing slupree out of her carpet for trhee days. and I scared the sh!t out of my b/f.

Thinking it over I think I prefered getting beat over some of the things that my parents said to me.That expression about words hurting worse than fists sometimes.. it's true.

Revenge being something that I consider important, its a good thing my parents never did.

Except that one time that my dad pinned me to the ground and punched me in the face straight up (I was like 8 or 9 or something). I've yet to collect on that debt.

They got into a huge argument and my mom ran away to LA for a week or something. If my parents had gotten divorced, it would've been pretty hard to convince me that it wasn't my fault. After I turned 10 I never got hit again until I was like 17, and she used coat hangers which snapped in half on my back and did absolutely nothing.

Surprisingly now my mom and I have a very good relationship

After years of getting hit by the same type of things i gradually grew desensitized towards it. All sorts of things would be breaking on my back/arms/legs and i wouldnt even flinch after the age of 14 or so. Sadly, not flinching usually brought more hits due to it frustrating them. I have yet to forgive them.

Yep

Shoot, The few dozen or so times I got beat was anything my parents could easily get their hands on, if there was nothing around then it was just their hands.

Although my parents could be considered somewhat abusive, I can definitely say that more parents need to be whipping more ass and setting children straight from day one. Kids learn too early that they can get away with crap when they arent dealth with immediately or consistantly, and so usually get really rotten and rebellious. Screw that, I dare my kids to backtalk me even once, or look at me funny. That ass is whipped.

On the same note however. I dont think discipline should ever be done with raised voice or cussing. It should be straight up " I love you but you arent going to act out like this and get away with it, now heres your whippin" Then it should be followed up with a hug.

SAME HERE!!!!!!

My sisters and I were terrified of it. We used to call it "the banana tree" and would sing "the banana tree... is looking at me..."

To this day, I cannot look at a feather duster without cringing.

Strangely enough, I don't ever remember getting the belt. I was grounded plenty of times, sure. And I was denied access to stuff I wanted - heck, I was once even denied a piece of my own birthday cake because I didn't eat any lunch beforehand :p - and I was just plain intimidated, at least when I was little: my dad stands 6'2 and about 250 lbs. My mother is quite a bit smaller, but dang she can get mean :Q

I got my arse whipped many times as a kid. By my parents as well as teachers, etc. Back in those days, teachers didn't fear lawsuits and such. And admittedly, I was out of line. Some teachers were kinda twisted tho, using electric cords or displaying their paddles like a trophy at the front of the class.

I've got 2 kids of my own now. They seldom get to the point of needing spankings, but heres how I view the spanking vs. "time-out" style discipline:

There are SOME things that require the shock of a spanking to get the point across. I'd rather risk my kid getting pissed at me for spanking them than to have them suffer 3rd degree burns because they didn't know not to play with the stove. To me, "time-outs" for things like that are too much of a risk.
