If i am not mistaken, if you have a phone wihtout service still plugged in, you can still dial 911..... *edit* doh! Konichiwa beat me...

I know that is true, at least in many locations.

Not in my neighborhood.

car + charger > power outage

I thought most cell service went down immediately during the big black-out out east. I heard that only one cellular provider had back-up power for the antennas. I don't remember who it was though, or whether they had back-up power everywhere, or just in NYC.

How many times have you seen an entire section of the country (multiple states) go down?

You head out to your car and plug in your 12V car adapter.

The last time I cut my land line, I could not dial anything. There was NOTHING.

Are you sure its federal law?

It's federal law that a cell phone with no service still be able to dial 911. A land line with no service won't even get a dial tone.

Nice! Unfortunately we live in a miniature valley behind some hills and our cellphone reception is crap, and will be for the forseeable future. Plus I'm on dialup at home 🙁

If you had waited a fews weeks, you could have changed your home phone number to one of your new cellphones.

My understanding was that you could only switch cell phone numbers to another provider, not land line numbers.

Then I go out to the car, turn on the car and plug in the cell phone...
D'oh! (what I do now most of the time when my wife forgets to charge the phone)

We had never even had a cell phone until a year ago.
Then we bought a house in a small town right outside of Medford, Oregon. Medford is serviced by Qwest, but our town is only serviced by Sprint for local service. And calling Medford, 5 miles away, would have been a long-distance call. Plus Sprint local phone service is expensive. So we decided to give up the land-line and get 2 cell phones. It ended up being a better deal to just get 2 separate accounts instead of the family plan.

We don't miss having a land-line at all. We pay 40 a month on each phone for 1100 minutes with free nights and weekends and free long distance. So I'm pretty sure we've ended up saving money.

EDIT: Target has some really good prices on things like chargers and faceplates, not sure about batteries. But the selection is limited to the more popular phones.

With the new act in November, you can switch land lines to a cell and a cell to a landline. Pretty cool. It's causing headaches for the phone companies, though.

I'd love to see what happens when you get in a car accident 20 miles from home and your land line won't reach... :disgust:
Cell phones are safer... by far.

are you completely daft? why would you use a landline phone in a car?

Wouldn't a cell phone still work if the power went off?

not when the battery runs out, which you just quoted me saying.

Are you? That was my point. Cell phones work everywhere. Landlines don't.
