Yipee...Just made the switch...land line is being CUT!

We finally made the plunge and got 2 cell phones on a family plan. We have been waiting for prices to drop to what we pay for local and long distance per month. We are ending up paying only $10 more! 🙂 At the end of the week our land line phone is being turned off!😀

Just picked up the phones 10 minutes ago.

Any places to get accessories cheap?

My landline is only $3 cheaper than my cell phone per month. Really should cut it, but I have too many resumes out with my landline number.

i'd love to see what happens when your battery runs out, power goes off, and you need to dial 911.

2 phones...chances are remote. And that is the reason we got cell phones. We drive alot, and long distances often and this makes calling for help easier on the road versus not having them.

I'd love to see what happens when you get in a car accident 20 miles from home and your land line won't reach... :disgust:
Cell phones are safer... by far.

Wouldn't a cell phone still work if the power went off?

I'm planning on doing this later this month. I just need to switch to cable internet and ditch my DSL first. It would have happened a long time ago, otherwise.

Anyone know when the "number portability' thing goes into full effect?

November 24, and I think it only for mobile numbers switching.

Right, but it means I should be able to switch carriers and keep my number, right? I bet companies will start running crazy "switch" deals to pull customers when it goes into effect. Cool phones for cheap and plans for dirt...mmm...can't wait 😀

Another solution to this is just to have an old phone around. I have several that I no longer use that are fully charged -- as long as the phone will turn on, even though it has no service, it is required to be able to connect to 911. Very useful to have around the house.

To each their own, but I like my home line. I tried cutting the cord. I quickly realized the disadvantages. It's actually cheaper than boosting my plan to the 800-1000 anytime minutes I'd need if I didn't have a home line, and the home line is a lot more reliable than even the best wireless carrier here. I can send and receive faxes using my computer. I can nef if the cable connection goes down. I don't need to spend $75 on the hardware hack my Tivo would need to use broadband. I can give salespeople and other business relations my home phone and keep my cell number to myself, giving it out only to people who I deem worthy of getting a hold of me when I'm not home. It's a power and convienience thing.

The most important thing is peace of mind though, because 911 calls go through to right dispach center almost instantly. If I call 911 from home, they've got my location within 3 seconds (I've seen the center in operation, it's fast). If I call from my cell phone, it goes to state patrol dispatch, who I need to ask to transfer me to Minneapolis. Then I need to tell Minneapolis where I am, because location technology is something that nobody is willing to pay for, so it's not in place yet, despite being supported my most new phones.

If I just had to get rid of one or the other, it would probably be the home line. On the other hand, if I had kids, it wouldn't even be a question. The home line would stay no matter what.

That's just me though. Good luck.

If i am not mistaken, if you have a phone wihtout service still plugged in, you can still dial 911.....

I know that is true, at least in many locations.
