I personally would never buy a 924, but this one is no where near in bad of shape as posters here are saying. New rubber, some body work, and some paint, and it would look like new. It might be worse in the underbody, but the rust appears to be minimal. The big question is the engine. If it's been sitting for 20 years, for God's sake do not attempt to start it without a complete fluids, plugs, and filters change first. You're really rolling the dice there. Get it checked out and make sure that block isn't toast (at the very least).
But, as project cars go, this could be a good one. Not the easiest and certainly not the cheapest, but it could be fun if you did most of the work yourself. Don't expect it to be cheap or easy though, 'cause it won't. You'd certainly be better off financially if you could find one that is already in good running condition to begin with. From this one, I wouldn't expect to profit off it, or even make my money back, but properly built this could make a decent track car or cruising car. Some of these did have 3.0 I4 turbos, yaknow. A very fun engine with a deep throaty roar.
And Zenmervolt, I consider a car with high maintenance costs (even scheduled maintenance) to be unreliable. That's just me.

The previous owner did them. I haven't done too much with it (aside from scaring the living sh!t out of myself the first time I took it out on a track and found it had just a few differences in handling from the 924S). I wasn't sold on the black wheels at first, but they looked a lot better in person. It's just heartbreaking to have it sitting back home in Ohio while I wait to get a place with a garage. At least I know that my father is enjoying taking care of it. He gets to have a "mid-life crisis car" for a while until I have a place out here for it to live.

Huh - I must admit I kinda like the second-gen V-6 Probe. My mom used to have one and I enjoyed it. It sure as hell doesn't compare to just about any Porsche (though, to get back to the topic, it does compare favorably to a 924!).

Honestly, that's only worth about $7,000. It's within reach as a "weekend" car for a family man with a good job like yourself. Maybe not right now with skoorbaby, but in a few years sure. That's what I like about the 944 series, it's affordable and reliable if taken care of.
I don't really have much of a coice with those sorts of cars though. It's a disease where I have to have the car first and then after I've got it I figure out how the fvck I'm going to get the money. If you read Peter Egan in Road & Track, you've got a pretty good idea of what happens to me when "the right car" comes along.

Well luckily the car is easy to work on.
If you don't do any major body work you'd save a bundle. That would make it hte perfect track car too. Just make sure the chassis itself is stiff (add a rollcage and other required parts like new bushings, tie bars (if available for 924s), etc...).
Leave the exterior as it is since it will get damaged during track days anyway (hopefully not..but if it did...you wouldn't care 🙂 ).
