Perhaps if he gets "pushed over the edge" so easily (by his own constituents no less), he is unfit to serve as an elected public official representing the people he detests so much.

But detestation is surely representative of his constituents no?

This guy has been in the politics game a long time. If he was easily pushed over the edge something like this would have happened before. This is tremendously out of character for him. I'm just speculating on what happened given what I know of the population in the area, what I know of Rep. Etheridge, and hearing some of especially nasty things said to other legislators by their constituents recently. I'm sure I'll find out more info this week through the local scuttlebutt. But it looks like everyone on here has pretty much decided the guy is the devil spawn. He's not BTW, despite his apparent monumental screw up here, and despite myself not agreeing with him on several political issues.

Coming from you that's simply a truism. ;)
Is there an argument in there? :D

No, just that things appear and disappear according to perspective. I think what folk object to isn't derision, but derision directed at them. If the student was a commie pinko lefty questioning why we're killing Muslims, he would probably be cheered as a hero by the folk who now run him down. And clearly, if the Congressman liked himself he'd have had no problem with that student.

What is a truism to me is almost entirely unknown to the world and the reason it is dying.

You are that living laugh line, a caricature of your own twisted self. You own yourself just about every time you open your yap.

he is just the mirror image of yourself (and a few others here).

i personally don't see this as a huge story. the guy should have kept his cool. but i doubt he has ever done such things before or will again. everyone can have a off day.

Yet another mindless waver of the bullshit false equivalency flag.

If you have the attention span and the integrity, go look at my last 100 posts and then his last 100 posts and then come back here and try, with a straight face, to make your shallowly attractive but easily disproved "point."

Given that this was a Democratic Congressman assaulting citizens who are perceived to be right-wing, I obviously knew that some people would rush to justify what he did; that's part of the reason I posted this. But even I'm surprised by the extent of the eagerness to defend a clearly illegal and indefensible assault based on the political ideologies of those involved (just check the comment section for how extreme that mentality is, and I've seen it elsewhere). Some are honest enough to admit that because the victims here were right-wing advocates, they should be presumed to have provoked this and got what they deserved (who knew that the law of assault depends upon the political affiliation of aggressor and victim?), while others -- amazingly -- continue to fantasize about all sorts of events that they claim probably happened off camera to mitigate or justify the Congressman's actions, even though: (a) I linked to the unedited video above which shows that no such thing happened and (b) Rep. Etheridge has now issued a statement and not even he claims there were any such mitigating or justifying events that were concealed as a result of dishonest video editing. But still, the claim persists.

Some people obviously cannot accept that a Good Democrat could possibly do something bad to a conservative, and they'll continue to deny reality -- or just invent realities that don't exist -- to justify that. This is not a hard case. As Pam Spaulding said: "Sad that personal responsibility for being a violent hothead now comes with mitigation talking points. Dems need to quit it." Tribalism is a natural part of the human perspective, but it's amazing when even incidents as relatively trivial and clear-cut as this one are processed through its distorting lens. Do you think any Democrats defending Etheridge -- or most conservatives criticizing him -- would be doing so if he were a right-wing GOP Congressman from North Carolina who assaulted nice liberal students questioning him on a public sidewalk about his conservative views?

Integrity? Like accusing a member of being a pedophile in off-topic?

http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2071724&highlight=

Yes, all of your posts are just so wonderful. Making you could make some jokes about rape next? Freaking hilarious.. Maybe when someone posts about their mother you could accuse them of incest? OMG that would be so freaking funny.

Try again. Stick to off-topic where the kiddies are in awe over your forum title.

OMG! This user has 'anus' in his name! BRILLIANT! Its not like it hasn't been posted about 10,000 times before.. several of those by you. Should I find how many of your last 100 P&N posts include the word anus?

I can continue this shit all night. You want to call it now or should I keep going?

"Do you fully support the Obama agenda?"

WTF? How dare that punk kid ask such an incendiary question!

This!? This, after all the good congressman Etheridge has been through? He's to be commended, especially after all those many conservative racist hillbilly attacks. He's obviously just voting for things that are good for everyone whether they know it or not.

This is enough to drive anyone over the edge!

This is just more evidents that conservatives are truly evil.

I think this guy (congressman) behaved badly. but he behaved badly because he's someone who is impulsive not because he belongs to the Democratic party. I'm sure he'll do just that even if he's not affiliated with any party. His party affiliation doesn't cause his bad behavior, maybe his family education does.

When would have been awesome if he knocked that old fart out on the ground.

One would hope this would be obvious but P&N is full of so many one-sided buffoons they cannot help themselves but immediately jump to partisan hackery, it's a sad thing to see them do it, though. As impulsive in many ways as this idiot in the video.

When I was working in NC and living in Lillington, NC very near him he was a douchebag then and hasn't changed for the better over the years.

He should be kicked to the curb ASAP, regardless of what party he is a member of. Really he is a real "Member".

What difference does it make?
Asking someone a question is no excuse for assault. I don't care who you are.

I could walk into the middle of the million man march dress in KKK gear and it still wouldn't be an excuse to assault someone.

If the Amazing Racist can walk through a gas station in KKK garb a cross and ask black people for a gallon of gas and a lighter and not get beat up, you should be good to go.
