Ask for a promotion instead but keep your pay rate.

there's nothing for me to get promoted to.

Whoa if there's nothing for you to be promoted to then your yearly raise is the least of your concerns...

its a small manufacturing company. there's only 2 people in the IT dept - my boss and myself.

dead end job. get out.....you can make more money driving a truck.

he should have been doing this since the moment layoffs began.

i've been looking for a new job ever since i started...
as i already said at least twice in this thread, i am actively looking, but there isn't a whole hell of a lot thats out there. the stuff that is out there pays too low or i don't have any experience or knowledge.

The best time to look for a new job, is while you currently have a job.

Advice.. Keep the smile on your face; work hard and productive..
Prepare for the worst.. sounds like the company isn't 100% sure on its future..

You need an attitude adjustment. Your constantly thinking of why you can't do something. I'm always thinking how I can do something. Which attitude better serves your interests in life? You've gone no where with your current attitude...i think its time for a change.

EDIT: since when is 50 miles a 3 hour commute? Are you on rollerblades?

Move. It's that simple.

My current salary puts me in a particularly awkward situation. I NEED a 6k raise this coming fall when my annual review is but I am not sure how the IT director is going to take it. I make so little right now that getting even 10% raises each year would put be back several years of what I need to be earning to live a decent life and being able to move out. I dug myself a pretty big hole accepting less than 30k for my current job.

i love how atoters think everything is simple. hey, just move. i can't afford a place in a low income area now, what makes you think i can afford a place somewhere else?

oh thats right, they're all millionaires already so money doesn't matter to them.

gee, maybe because there are valid reasons for it?

i never said 50 miles was 3 hours. i said that my search radius is already 50 miles from home. i don't want to drive any further than that.

The "I can't do it" attitude at work again. your never going to amount to anything thinking like that snap out of it.

This year, I've just decided not to fill out my self evaluation and not even expect a raise. Much less stress.

Most people can't afford this as the cost of living increases. Just my fuel bills were around 1500$ higher last year than before. Electricity also went up a few hundreds, etc. etc etc.

Incidently, we are lucky if we get 2.5% here (unionized so its the same for everyone), but we are luckily making above average so I've no complaint as long as I get at least 2% to cover cost of living increases.

No sir. Entry level IT tech support for a travel agency. In some ways I am the admin down here although I admit I am still working on my Network+ and MCSA certifications.

you've yet to name a single valid reason for anything in this thread. If you would like to contest this please list valid reasons in bullet point format so I can easily counter them.

lol, man, are people here that out of touch with reality or what? yes, people do make less than 30k full time. not everyone make 100k+ a year like you all seem to think. i was making 28k full time at my previous job. i started this job at 30k and i'm currently at 33k

What have you got to lose if you strapped down for a year or so, sold your guns, sold your car and bought a beater, stopped eating out and buying stupid sh!t, paid off your debt, then moved to a new city with a new life? Your virginity?

I think you should count yourself lucky that you still have a job!
I started with my current employer in 1999, after retiring from Union work.
I haven't had a raise since I started, (But I started at nearly double my Union pay + a lot better benefits package plus Expense account).
My second year here, our quarterly bonuses nearly matched my salary, somewhat less the following 2 years, Then they stopped altogether.
What happened is that we simply had no work for over a year, but after a couple of years now, we as a company are "Getting back on our feet". The bonuses have returned as of last quarter, and as long as we continue to turn a profit, they should get better.

Point being, their is really no such thing as an "Automatic" yearly raise. Sure, some companies used to do that in a better economy, but now, companies have to look at the bottom line before doling out more.
You may actually be worth more to them, but likely they simply can't afford to pay you more at this time.
