this year, about 2/3 of the company is laid off and has been for seevral months. we didn't get any yearly bonuses and i have heard nothing about a raise yet.

should i ask or am i pretty much screwed since the company isn't doing so well?

DEMAND a raise, with less employees around, there should be more money for you.

If the company is not doing well, don't ask for a raise. This is the time that they look for cheaper workers. Keep your trap shut and look else where for employment,

We got the shaft this year as well. At least I'm still employed, can't say that for quite a few coworkers.

Yeah. You try that...

Sh1t happens man. Businesses go up and down. The company has a bad year you are affected. I worked for three months total when i started last year and got a $500 bonus. I worked the whole year here 2006 and was even promoted mid-year only to end up with a measly $700 bonus because the company did poor even though my department (IT) was right on track and met their goals.

Hmm, I would've definitely said to ask for a raise but since you said you have been looking for a new job for a while now and can't find anything then I'd say you got no leverage. You're stuck in that hole.

most people here say thats the worst thing to do anyway. even if they do pay you more, they know you aren't happy and all that other stuff.

well that's not the way I see it. The way I see it is inflation is gonna eat away your salary whether you like it or not. It's up to your yearly bonus to keep you ahead of inflation. Otherwise your salary is actually deteriorating. So asking for a raise shouldn't be misinterpreted as being unhappy.

Ask for a promotion instead but keep your pay rate.

there's nothing for me to get promoted to.

Whoa if there's nothing for you to be promoted to then your yearly raise is the least of your concerns...

IT is still a cost center, even if it's a really efficient cost center. If you want to make money, be on the side where the money is coming in (sales).

Just keep the job and don't worry about it. It is awfully easy to get all upset about a few bucks per paycheck.

In 2005, I finished a masters in engineering, and was told by my manager that I'd get a raise. It didn't happen, so I asked in six months, and he told me that I'd get it at the annual raise time. Instead, I got a 0.8% raise.

This year, I've just decided not to fill out my self evaluation and not even expect a raise. Much less stress.

If you're an above average employee and think you deserve it, then ask for it. However, it sounds like you hate the job and the company isn't doing well, so I wouldn't expect too much. Keep the job you have now and keep looking ...

Over the past 2 years I have only received about 5-6K in raises, and I am actually doing better than most.
