I've always wondered why it's nearly impossible for conservatives to be funny. Whenever they try it just tends to come off as mean spirited. Even though I'm not their intended audience, it seems that this opinion is pretty widely shared.

Well, that opinion is certainly widespread among those who laugh like jackals when Maher says Sarah Palin is a slut, or when Letterman makes jokes about her 14 year old daughter getting knocked up. Mean spirited is apparently in the eye (and ear) of the beholder.
