YATT: some restaurants suggestiing 30% tips

Detailing New York's tipping culture Tripadvisor.com recommends that waiters and waitresses should be given a bonus of up to 20per cent for good service, while bartenders should be left $1 for every alcoholic drink purchased.

I'll do 20% or higher if they earn it, EARN IT.

As for $1/drink. Yeah fuck you guys. What's a poured beer in New York cost you guys these days? $10? The price is already ridiculous.

Why would you ever want the gov't involved for something like this? Let them "suggest" the moon if they want. Doesn't mean they're getting it.

20% is my default, and it goes up and down from there depending on service. I have a minimum of 10%(you're almost worthless), and an undetermined max(depends on the total meal cost)You have to be a real fuckup to get your tip reduced by me, though it's happened a couple ties.

I give $1 per drink, but not every drink. If you're good, you'll get it for most drinks If not, only a couple drinks.

They can suggest whatever they want. I don't care.

I usually tip well (20% or so) BUT if the service is shitty OR it's expected of me......I give NOTHING.

i start at 20% and go up or down. i will leave a penny if they fucking suck and tell the manager that.

$1 a drink is insane. i don't do it every time either. no way do you deserve a $1 just for pulling a beer out of the tap.

the idea that waitress's deserve %30 is insane.

For the states with the "sub-minimum wage" for tipped employees...just pay them the full minimum wage and let them have ALL their tips.

There are quite a few states that do that, and prices seem to be about the same as in the "sub-minimum wage" states.
When there is a significant difference in pricing, it's usually due to other factors than wages...real estate prices and such.

I don't think I've ever gotten 30% worth of service. That's ridiculous! I do standard tipping unless the service is really good or really bad. And I've noticed a downhill trend lately...had really poor service the last few times I've gone out.

How about restauranteurs actually pay their staff properly? Then we can tip if service is exceptional, not because we feel obliged to pay salaries.

I only tip because I know that if I dont, the waiter doesnt get paid a cent. If waiters were paid decently, I would tip for exceptional service.

Ehh, I usually tip between 15 and 20 pct at most places.

Cheap full service places with great service I tip a lot higher as a percentage (but around the same in terms of overall dollar amount.)

IE, Mexican place by work, I might tip them $4-5 for a $8 lunch.

These people think that just by suggesting it, they can create a new norm. Well fuck that. Fight the power. Tip less.

Same way I am.
If you suck, too bad.
If you're good, you deserve it.
It's quite simple really.

I tried to drink my way through the east coast IPA selection in NYC over the past 3-days.

$7/pint for a micro, $7-$9 at expensive restaurants for a bottle.

Ithaca Flower Power IPA - really friggin tasy!

I think it would really depend on where you are going. I generally tip around 18-20% as a norm at places I frequent. The sad truth is service in general is going downhill though. Maybe not in your big cities (like NYC) but around where I live, much of the service is mediocre at best, and I'm not a demanding person.

A "requirement" to pay a certain % of a tip at an establishment for anyone under a large party automatically = a no visit from me. They could have the best service ever, but that's for me to decide, not them. If the service deserves it then I'll tip more.

The tipping culture is the reason why I don't eat out much. I'd just prefer that we scrap the whole tipping system and increase the price of restaurant food.

My usual reply to that kind of jackassery is "Fine, although I'm going to have to suggestyou lower your prices by 50%. No? Then I guess were back to tipping according to level of service."

Same here but it'll never happen. I love how they do things in France. Service is included and you can give a Euro or two to reward good service. There's still an incentive for waiters to do a good job (a dollar or two per table adds up to a decent chunk of change) but no one gets to freeload.

yeah, f you. this is now getting out of control, seriously. when is the government going to do something about this?

There you go again.
Its not the governments job to fix every stupid little thing you dont like, especially when you have plenty of options.

1. dont go there. Its a private business and you are a free citizen.

2. Patron them but dont bend over for their bullshit. Vote with your dollars, let them see.

3. Some halfway combo of the previous two options.

4. whine on internet (least effective solution)
