I try to always tip ~30%. But I wouldn't be paying after every beer. Thats what tabs are for, leave the card open and tip at the end of the night. Better to tip ~30% on the total bill, rather than 30% on every drink yes?

WTF? For one, it works out the same. For two, who the fuck tips 30% on drinks?

as far as $7 beer goes, i can only remember 3:

-Chimay at a local place
-Lucifer (discontinued) in SF
-Heineken bottle in a Vegas club

I paid 13 Euro (around 20 bucks American at the time) for a 10oz Kronenbourg 1664 (think French bud lite) Prince de Galles Hotel in Paris, talk about a rip off!

So I was at a bar last weekend drinking beer. I noticed that many people left $1 tip for every $7 beer they bought. I thought it was common knowledge that barmaids deserved at least $2 or even $3 tip for each beer. I always tip $3 for every $7 beer. I'm not rich or pretend to make tons of money, but I seriously thought a $1 tip was too low.

I'm curious about what do you tip when buying beer at a bar....

$1 per drink no matter the price. I don't know anyone who tips more than that, not even my friends who are big tippers and like to eat out at fancy places.

I try tip 30% most of the time, unless the service is absolutely dismal. I like being a good customer, and if the drinks are good, well mixed, etc, arrive in a timely fashion, and the server can suggest good drinks when I'm not sure what I'm in the mood for, why shouldn't I tip well?

Math fail

Meh, it was always my worst subject.

Damn, you must go to a lot of dives.

You'd hate the $10+ at some places here. I admit it's outrageous, but not the bartender or servers fault if I want to be there.

No, but I rarely drink at all...however, I might have a beer or two with my dinner...especially if we're out for Mexican food...but a beer is usually about $4...and some of the restaurants have pints for less than that.
Everyone is correct when they say that the outrageous prices are not the fault of the server or bartender...but instead, they're the fault of anyone stupid enough to pay those prices.
$10 for a beer? fuck that...I can buy a 12 pack of MOST commercially produced beers for less than $15...most for about $10.

All you guys are cheapskates and shouldn't be going out if you can't pay the right amount of tip. They bust their butt to give you that beer. Bunch of losers.

/typical ATOT tip response

Perhaps, but none of us attacked you personally.
You shouldnt be posting on a forum if you cant be an asshole.
Loser.

Have a nice night, and god bless you.

Almost all food you can prepare in the comfort of your trailer much cheaper too.

Going out gets you atmosphere, bands/show, occasionally the chance to mingle with some famous types.

However, and get this; the real benefit of paying $10 a beer and $30+ for an entree is you won't have Joe Bluecollar and his 20 'honor/autistic' kids running around screaming.

Profit.

Who the hell goes to bars that charge $7 per beer?

Unfortunately I have, and that was 20 years ago. I'd be scared to see what the prices are now. That was the "trendy" section of Philly, and I think Georgetown had similar prices :^/

Geez some of you are really old. I've gone to places where beers are $7 many times. Sometimes it's fun to go to a big bar or club where there's a ton of people and have fun. It's also fun to go to a place and get $3 beer. You can have fun at both.

anyhoo. for serious... i don't think i can get a snakebite (1/2 guinness and 1/2 strongbow) pint for under 6 bucks. and it's a PLEJ. just sayin

Explain to me how a barmaid who simply pour beer in a glass, walk towards you and give you your beer deserve a $3 tip for that?

I'm so not found of the tipping system...don't get me wrong, I tip when the service is great (friendly, smiles, make sure you have everything you need, etc) but I don't have any troubles not tipping at all when the person is just annoyed when you ask for ketchup or seems pissed when you ask for something extra...

I don't drink beer so I tend to tip well 2-3+$ so the next white russian I get is still made well. I really don't understand why you'd pay someone 3$ to bring you a beer...

Your Canadian so clueless to much of this and a HUGE problem down here in S. Florida. So much so that some places have signs directly to your kind and even those that joke about going elsewhere if you have an issue with tipping.

The tip amount is not based on just the service, it's tied to the item/fee/etc.

It's much like a hamburger plate at a five star restaurant in and of itself is not worth the $30 they are charging for it.
