I typically leave $1 for a beer unless the place I'm in is super busy and the bartender made a point to serve me first then I'll tip more. However, I always tip a bartender a lot more than normal at a bar that I'm a regular at because she always throws in a couple extra beers or shots at no charge through the course of the night.

If I'm tipping I usually flash some sack first so as not to surprise her.

NYC drinks are hella expensive, so I know where you're coming from... kind of. We go to school in philly but took a trip up to NYC for the weekend, went to a bunch of bars. One place was a really nice, classy "speakeasy" type bar. $13 cocktails... but they were fuckin delicious. $3 tip for that one. another place we went to was this belgian beer place, had some delicious beers for $8 or $9. We all gave $1 tips for the beer though.

Sorry, but ballparks are not upscale, nor they deserve to charge $8 per beer. You go to a ballpark for the game. You go to a bar for the booze. Major difference. Besides, you can't go around tipping everyone. Society declares that there are some people who you tip and some who you do not.

Neither are night clubs if you ask me... I agree that you go to a ballpark for a the game and a bar for the booze but the main point I was bringing up is that we tip because of social norms... not because the reason you stated to begin with which is that you tip for the service and the experience. Otherwise, I don't see why you shouldn't tip the ballplayers either. And I find it just ridiculous how it's expected of you to tip for one thing and not another because of it. If they can charge $7 for a beer and people are willing to pay it, then I don't see no reason why they shouldn't just get rid of tipping entirely and just charge $8/$9 per beer to pay the barmaid a salary. As if that extra buck was the "last straw" that determines whether someone is buying a beer at all anyway.

Depending on the place and how long you are planning to be there.

The thing to do is tip in advance. Drop the server an extra 20 and tell her that's her tip for the night.

So I was at a bar last weekend drinking beer. I noticed that many people left $1 tip for every $7 beer they bought. I thought it was common knowledge that barmaids deserved at least $2 or even $3 tip for each beer. I always tip $3 for every $7 beer. I'm not rich or pretend to make tons of money, but I seriously thought a $1 tip was too low.

I'm curious about what do you tip when buying beer at a bar....

they are pouring a beer, not making a drink.

It's called society. Don't you want to be a part of society?

I'd rather live in a society that pays their workers a decent wage instead of making them beg clients for money just for doing their job.

I am generally quite a generous tipper but I don't tip on a percentage basis for a drink on an as-you-go basis. I generally tip $1 (or as much as $1.50 if I've just received change) for a drink (I don't drink anything complex - just beer or a whiskey on the rocks). I will tip more if I'm running a tab and somewhere where we're drinking something more complicated.

Well then you might as well just pack up and move to the east side!

If boob or ass touches me while she is serving the drink, I automatically tip 100%.
Any other physical contact = 50%.

$1 per beer, and not every beer. If I have 5 beers, I'll probably have left $4 total.

back in the day...run a tab, tip on the tab.

If I was tipping per beer, for the first 6 or so it was a buck. Then it would go up to $3-$5 by the end of the night. Opposite for mixed drinks. Always tip big at the beginning of the night to try to get some extra juice in there.

1 or 2 depending on quality of service. Beers are quick and easy, cocktails are a different story.

WTF? It's usually $1 a drink always for things like beer and wine. If you are ordering up $100 shots of Louis XXXX that the bartender has to keep making special trips for then a little more skin.

I usually tip up front, that sets the stage for great service always.

$1 a beer here as well. What kind of beer were you drinking anyway? I usually drink Hacker-Pschorr and there's a few places that will have 1 liter steins for $7-8 that I'm more than happy to pay for over a Miller or Bud product.

I try to always tip ~30%. But I wouldn't be paying after every beer. Thats what tabs are for, leave the card open and tip at the end of the night. Better to tip ~30% on the total bill, rather than 30% on every drink yes?

If you charge me $7 for a beer...you ain't getting a tip.

That's fucking ridiculous.

Damn, you must go to a lot of dives.

You'd hate the $10+ at some places here. I admit it's outrageous, but not the bartender or servers fault if I want to be there.
