If I am getting table service I usually tip $2. I know that at the end of the night, %20 (or more) is going to the bartender, so I want to make sure the waitress gets her share. If I am at the bar, they get $1 a drink. The only time I'll tip more is if I order something that takes some mixing, usually a girly drink for the lady.

I guess what I've always thought is that if you're paying $7 for a beer at a decent bar, you're expected to show your appreciation not just for the person who serves the beer, but for the experience of being at a place that is upscale enough to deserve charging $7 per beer.

Every bar I attended, I just put some bills on the counter and the bartenders made change as they got me beer. At the end of the night I figured out what I spent and left an appropriate tip.

If you are at that type of place, they are laughing at you for drinking beer you fucking hick.

$7 beer? Holy shit, I'd buy a 6 pack instead and have someone over. 😛

Not into the bar scene anyway, but $7 is insane.

Curious... do you or would you tip if you were to say go to a ball game and paid $6 for a beer?

A ball game is different. I paid for the ticket. The people who sell beer at ball games don't rely on tips for their income anyways. I never tip at a sporting event.

So I was at a bar last weekend drinking beer. I noticed that many people left $1 tip for every $7 beer they bought. I thought it was common knowledge that barmaids deserved at least $2 or even $3 tip for each beer. I always tip $3 for every $7 beer. I'm not rich or pretend to make tons of money, but I seriously thought a $1 tip was too low.

I'm curious about what do you tip when buying beer at a bar....

jesus.. $7 for beer? a shot of Patron costs less!

unless it was a pitcher?!

I always pay with credit, so I just tip when I close my tab.

And $7 beer is for a nice dinner beverage, not for messy beers at a bar.

How is it different to a cover charge at a night club for example? So if you went to a night club, you woudn't tip at the bar now?

You said specifically that the tip is "to show your appreciation not just for the person who serves the beer, but for the experience of being at a place that is upscale enough to deserve charging $7 per beer."

So you don't appreciate the person who served you at the ballpark? Is a ballgame not a unique experience and upscale enough considering they are able to charge you $x for a beer? Besides the price of the ticket more or less goes to the owner of the club, the players, or the association in royalties(mlb, nfl, etc). I don't see how you can ignore one place just because you paid a price of a ticket to watch a game unrelated to the person who served you who in fact probably make a lot less than a barmaid does because you DON'T tip them.

Sorry, but ballparks are not upscale, nor they deserve to charge $8 per beer. You go to a ballpark for the game. You go to a bar for the booze. Major difference. Besides, you can't go around tipping everyone. Society declares that there are some people who you tip and some who you do not.

It's a buck a beer... and what beer are you drinking for $7 a bottle OUTSIDE of a ball park? Hawaii is damn expensive and I still only pay MAX $5.50 for a local brew. And even then... holy crap.

Reservoir Dogs quote? Nice.

As for those who are surprised at $7 beers, come to NY and thats a bargain.

For those who said $7 Heinekens at Vegas night clubs, you must not have been to Vegas in a while. You'd be lucky to find one for $10 these days.

JLee: You cant get a shot of Patron for that much everywhere. Around here its probably $15.

Moral of the story, its all about where you live.

As for the tip, $1 no matter if the beer is $4 or $40.
