Jesus, this country is becoming a hell hole for white people. It won't be long and you could get lynched for just looking cross-eyed at a black girl.

Millinial gets angry; ... STFU bitch.

Newell Steamer completely missing context and the point of the discussion and again emotionally menstruating all over the thread about superficialities?

The series of events and reactions began with an Oct. 30 party at the Sigma Alpha Epsilon house in which a fraternity doorman allegedly said “white girls only” were welcome. The chapter president, Grant Mueller, has said the incident did not happen.

The forum Wednesday also focused on an email from the associate master of Silliman College, Erika Christakis, who warned students not to judge others’ choices of Halloween costumes too harshly. According to the Washington Post, she referred to her husband, Silliman Master Nicholas Christakis, in the email: “‘Nicholas says, if you don’t like a costume someone is wearing, look away, or tell them you are offended. Talk to each other. Free speech and the ability to tolerate offence are the hallmarks of a free and open society,’” the Post reported.

I did, what part did I miss? I'm guessing you are referring to the incident at the party, which one person says happened and the fraternity says did not? I wouldn't put it past them, but there is no evidence that it actually happened. And to be honest if I was in that frat I'd be worried somebody would get offended and me get expelled over something stupid.

You missed that the entire article was about a response to the first sentence of your quote, and not the professors email.

It mentions real violence and discrimination against individuals and not just some persons imagined "microagressions".

Ah. I figured when it said "the forum also focused on..." and then goes on to talk about the Halloween email, that would be what they were talking about. I went and reread it just to make sure I'm not misspeaking, and there were two incidents actually mentioned: one sentence (edit: two sentences) about the alleged incident at the party and three paragraphs about the email.

I'm reading it the same as you. It started with the "white girls only" sign on the frat door and then the Halloween email. Two entirely different things, which shouldn't be combined IMO. One is obviously racist while the other is a call for people to chill the f out. :D

edit: I meant "shouldn't" not "should"

What the fuck is wrong with our universities? In the other news, some Missouri university is all in protest that began because some random person unaffiliated with anything shouted something racist at a student and the University President apparently hasn't done enough in response to change the culture of the college? So they are going on hunger strikes and the football team is refusing to play? Until the President is thrown out of his job?

This is why there will never be peace. People will always join together against an issue, however small. My parents performed walk outs at school to protest Vietnam. Kids these days walk out because of Halloween costumes. :D

When I attended college it was protests against the Iraq war, and I'm like, "if you are against the Iraq war, fine, be against it. But I have nothing to do with any of that, I need to get to the end of this street, so kindly get the f... out of my way! Right now you're the pain in the country! Stop being a problem and start being a solution!"

But, no, the protests these days, I just don't know... life is complex, you're not going to be treated as a princess every moment of your life... and when you aren't, it's not the entire rest of the world's responsibility to make you feel special again...

We were just talking about how debate has completely changed because everyone is afraid to give their views on topics. It's gotten downright pathetic, and I don't know what the answer is because the first response is:

1. Back down.
2. Admit defeat
3. Admit you did the wrong thing, and we will never do it again and will always make sure you sensitive people don't get butt-hurt again.

It's completely tearing down the fabric of society. No one can talk to eachother anymore because you might offend someone that is 4 feet behind you.

Did I call it?

And...here come the apologies. Absolutely pathetic.

Or did I call it?

Wow...the girl shouting at him - I just wanted to punch her in the face.
These people are insane - the email is clearly addressed to insane folks, carefully trying to avoid offending them.

When are they going to stop with this "I'm offended by life" bullshit? What happened to intellectual honesty and common sense?

What control would that give them?

The PC nonsense and lack of intellectual honesty and common sense is used so that the absurd and unworthy can demand control in arenas and places where they would otherwise deserve none.

What is sad is the left used to be defenders of the freedom of speech and privacy. Now the extreme left is leading the march to destroy it. Just as Fahrenheit 451 warned us.

Finally saw the video. That was torturous. A professor shouldn't be put in that position. He was able to conduct himself well, but cornering a professor like that and then talking down to them is pretty ridiculous.

(I hate making the "their both the same" argument, but...) The extreme left and the extreme right are ironically quite similar when it comes to free speech. In their minds, free speech means hearing only what you want to hear. Otherwise, feel free to suppress speech and stick your fingers in your ears. The very idea of having your beliefs challenged is an anathema.

I'm still trying to figure out what in the hell anyone took exception to in that email, particularly to try to take it to a racist level. It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

And that video. I hope those students watch it themselves because it displays a classic lynch mob mentality. Surely Yalees know what that is.

I don't get it either. It seems like they've gone completely off the rails and fallen into a "you're either with us 100% or against us" mentality.

maybe it's less of a left and right and more of a circle

making the extreme left and extreme right right against each other.

and keeping the right and left diametrically opposed.

Completely ignorant and disrespectful. This was a protest to an email the guy's wife (also a prof at Yale) sent out saying not to be so damned sensitive about Halloween costumes.

See here for the text of the email

The girl even goes on to state that their jobs at Yale isn't supposed to be about creating an intellectual space but rather making it feel like a home. She's going to have a tough time when she tries to get employed in the real world. The whole culture of being offended over every little thing has got completely out of hand. Glad that the professor didn't back down, and their really needs to be a collective backlash from higher ed staff against the push to censor anything that may offend anyone.

What a Freakin Lunatic!!

Sorry, I am not OK with hypocrisy and double standards.

What "hypocrisy" and "double standards"? Give examples.

Or perhaps could it be your own self perceived slights and persecution complex that in wholly unrelated topics of discussion and disconnected debates on public forums there are people who dare to disagree with you.

You are the first and only person to bring race and gender into this discussion.
If you can't handle any debate or criticisms of a topic without retreating to the dung fortress of "you're all racist/sexist for criticizing this!" than that speaks volumes about your own limitations and biases.
