Just agree to go tomorrow, go to the job location but dont sign anything untill you work out your pay. Maybe he just wants to talk in person, some people are like that.

Agree to go to the location tomorrow not to start the job.

Reading some posts, sometimes I wonder how some members of ATOT get by everyday.

If he said that to me, I would turn him down on the spot. Basically he is blackmailing you, ie he takes away the job if you want to discuss salary and benefits. This is so absolutely ludicrous, I wouldn't even mess with this company. I wouldn't even answer his phone calls from now on. Have some self-respect and move on.

NEGATIVE

Honestly, the guy sounds like the "I'm the alpha male here and I'm going to make sure you know it"-type. He accomplishes this by deciding for the both of you what information you need to know. He'll decide what you're told and when you're told.

In short, he sounds like a control-freak. I would seriously either walk away or strap on some brass balls and even the playing field. Take control of the situation. Here's what I would do:

"I accept the offer contingent upon successful salary and benefits negotiations. Once these details have been finalized, I will be available to start."

If he answers with anything other than "sounds good, here are the details", WALK. Just say "Well, thanks for your time. Best of luck in your search."

I absolutely, positively, would NOT start one day of work without WRITTEN confirmation of your compensation package. The minute you walk in that door, you have NO leverage. If you were to start work and then decide to press the matter, they'll stall you until the day you quit.

DON'T put yourself in that position.

Just call back and say that you would like to start tomorrow, but that you have to choose the offer that is best for you and you can't do that without knowing the pay. Basically it sounds like he's trying to get you under his thumb from the get-go. Not a place that you want to be.

Hello, Mr. Smith, this is bonkers325 calling, in reference to the Ruler of the Universe position we have been discussing at XYZ Company. I wanted to get a few more details about the position so I can make a decision today as you requested. Do you have a minute to go over a couple things? Great. When we met earlier about the job, we never got a chance to discuss some of the details like salary and benefits. I'm sure you understand that I need to consider that as part of my decision, so could you give me some information about salary and benefits?

Ah forget it, as usual in these threads Kranky comes to the rescue :D

Your answer is too practical and logical. Does not compute, does not compute

i said something to that effect (i need to know details regarding salary and benefits before accepting) and he replied "we can discuss those after you accept the offer, i want you to start tomorrow"

He hasn't made an offer... He basically just asked you to start working for free...

It's amazing that half of ATOT hasn't managed to Darwin itself, considering the lack of common sense demonstrated in some threads.

And this is one of the better ones :(

Exactly. An offer comes in a letter with salary specified.

some extra details:

i dont exactly NEED a job, i am enrolled for graduate school (deciding on full-time/part-time, contingent on my job search). a job would be nice, but not necessary...

i've already met this guy, he seems like a nice guy, but the interview was short - he balked at the salary and benefits question. i know median salaries for Civil E's start at at least $45k... salary.com says $55k median. i layed down a desired salary of approximately $45k, he laughed and said $35k is what we can offer. i know i'm getting lowballed, he didnt even talk about benefits.

So, salary has at least been discussed once.

sounds sketchy. wouldnt be surprised if he pushed back paydays indefinitely and you end up working for free.

If the average salary in your area is at least $45k and possibly even close to $55k, then you should have felt very comfortable asking for $50k. A reasonable response from him would have been $45 - $50k, given that it sounds like he's on a very tight budget.

But tight budget or not, $10,000 under the low-end starting salary is a JOKE. On top of that, it sounds like he practically laughed at you when you asked about it.

I'm not sure why you think he's a nice guy... he sounds like a total jackass to me. But hey, you met the guy, I didn't.

I'd walk regardless.

If the work itself sounds interesting and is a relatively rare opportunity to get good, solid experience fast, then maybe you should consider it. But unless the opportunity is once in a lifetime, I'd bolt.

a discussion entails a conversation. i said "expected salary, $45k." he says "$45k is too much! $35k..."

then he goes on about opportunities for promotion... its a 12 person company based in a house in NJ

jbourne77::: it isnt a once in a lifetime opportunity, its a job in a related field, but definitely is not what i'll be doing 10 years from now. but its a way to get my foot in the door and say "i have experience as a Civil Engineer". the only reason i'm entertaining this job is because it's my first "real offer", if you can even call it that. $45k is pretty much the average national median for starting Civil Engineers as far as i'm concerned (a few friends were offered 43, 48, 55 for entry-level work).

ah HAH!

Now it all makes sense.

I don't know what the work is (nor am I a Civil Engineer), but there's also the risk of the work itself not being taken seriously once you leave. I.e., the experience won't count for much when you go interviewing with other companies.

Just something to consider.

Really, the whole thing stinks to hell. Doesn't sound like a healthy outfit if they can barely pay you, the guy doing the hiring sounds like a twat, and you're not too pumped about the job.

Meh.

i feel like he's trying to pressure me and lowball me on salary and benefits. this would be my first "real job" after college, so any advice is appreciated :p

i think the obvious answer is to finalize those important details before accepting the job offer, but what would ATOT do?

edit:
i said something to that effect (i need to know details regarding salary and benefits before accepting) and he replied "we can discuss those after you accept the offer, i want you to start tomorrow"

HAHAHAH FVCK THAT

Thats about as shady of a job as it gets. I'd tell him that you cannot accept a job position without the full detains and that it's very unprofessional of him to pull these shenanigans.
