YAJ(ob)T: Interviewer called back...

-no benefits were discussed.
-salary has not been negotiated yet.
-and he wants an answer before 5pm today...

i feel like he's trying to pressure me and lowball me on salary and benefits. this would be my first "real job" after college, so any advice is appreciated 😛

i think the obvious answer is to finalize those important details before accepting the job offer, but what would ATOT do?

edit:
i said something to that effect (i need to know details regarding salary and benefits before accepting) and he replied "we can discuss those after you accept the offer, i want you to start tomorrow"

edit2:
i called back. i asked for benefits, compensation, salary, job details...

benefits = health + 401k

2 weeks vacation after 6 months

i asked about salary again... he said $30-35k :| thats way too low to live on, not to mention i will have college and graduate school loans to pay off! not to mention $10 in tolls and at least a 1 hour commute each way! so i declined the offer 🙂

CLIFFS: got a sh!tty offer, turned it down.

also, thanks for the good advice. i appreciate it 🙂

Are you sure an offer was made? I would never accept something without knowing the terms. I would definitely go back to your employer and ask to see the terms in writing first before any decisions are made. What kind of company is this?

What are you, 12?

What company would make an offer that really isn't even an ... uh offer. He basically said come work for me blind.

call back and ask about the benefits and salaries before you give any answer....would you buy a car without knowing how many miles it had on it or whether there were airbags or not, or a computer without knowing what kind of processor and memory were inside???

Hello, Mr. Smith, this is bonkers325 calling, in reference to the Ruler of the Universe position we have been discussing at XYZ Company. I wanted to get a few more details about the position so I can make a decision today as you requested. Do you have a minute to go over a couple things? Great. When we met earlier about the job, we never got a chance to discuss some of the details like salary and benefits. I'm sure you understand that I need to consider that as part of my decision, so could you give me some information about salary and benefits?

Your answer is too practical and logical. Does not compute, does not compute

I dont' see why this is such a difficult question as to what you should do. Or why you needed a poll to know what ATOT would do....

I would certainly be wary of any company that does not want to discuss pay, benefits, etc. only after they tell you to accept the offer.

If that is the case, I would not accept the offer. If they are this sketchy in the hiring process ... who knows how much worse it will get once they have you working for them. Just say you cannot accept until you've had time to review the benefits and salary.

Walk away. The benefits and salary probably suck. That is why he doesn't want to talk about them until you've accepted the job. That way they could play a guilt card when you find out they suck and you want to walk away.

If they don't know but still want an answer (weird), you could also accept contingent on satisfactory salary, benefits, etc.

I read more posts - sounds sketchy. I wouldn't accept if they refused to talk about it. Well, unless I were willing to accept minimum wage. I'd make damn sure to get copies of documents showing I worked there, though.

I think the polite way to ask this would be to say "I would be glad to give you an answer by 5pm today, but I need to know what salary and benefits are being offered in order to make my decision." If they continue to skirt around your question stand your ground and say "I need to know what salary and benefits are being offered before I accept any job offer."

Like everyone else has said. Call and ask. This is part of a "job offer".

"Went want to hire you" isnt a job offer and it typically isnt done this quickly. All job offers I've gotten (granted only 2) come as letters with salary offer and a description of benifits. If you are desperate for a job then maybe take it. As long as you arent signing a contract for a period of time you can walk away at any time.

So what did you say after he said "we'll discuss after you accept" ?

Simple: tell him you accept pending a written offer letter. Ask that the offer letter detail your compensation package (salary, insurance, 401k, profit sharing, etc.) and be mailed to <insert address here>.

If the letter arrives with a less-than-desirable offering, you can contact him to negotiate.

This is just one approach. Personally, I think it's best to negotiate these things BEFORE an official offer is extended, but if he's wanting an answer ASAP, then this lets you give him one while still providing you with the information you need.

If it doesn't work out, simply rescind your acceptance. Happens all the time.

^ probably the best route.

Wow... wish I read that before my other replies.

This is a huge red flag. Unless you need cash, I would walk away. This is not the type of person you want to work for. If you need to buy yourself time to find another job, then take it with the understanding that it's a very temporary solution; one that doesn't even need to find its way on your resume later on.

But if you aren't in an emergency situation, I would firm up with this guy (you have nothing to lose) and say "well, I'm not comfortable accepting this position, let alone starting tomorrow, without knowing any details."

Get your salary. Get your benefits. Tell him that you're available to start in a week.
