Thank goodness the death toll should be under a dozen. The storm hit as a cat 2 which isn't so bad.I expect minor damage over all/.

someone remind me to actually turn my UPSes on so that they'll charge up =/

the neighborhood has a water treatment plant on one side and some gas storage facilities on the other, so maybe i'll have electricity sooner rather than later.

I don't want to sound like an ass, but you're an idiot. Watch the news, there's major damage - Reliant Stadium is missing part of the roof, a lot of the glass buildings in downtown are missing 50% of their windows with papers and furniture being thrown around. There's flooding all over, houses FLOATING AWAY, and most of Galveston is now part of the bay.

Let me know what's going on - we got power back about 50 minutes ago. If you need anything shoot me a PM.

Not to sound mean, but this is the deep south, it always looked like trash. The storm is probably cleaning things up.

Let's see if you just earned yourself a vacation.

Galveston Island although it has extreme damage probably lucked out. The worst surge was to its East.

Amazing for those people there. I was seriously worried that many would drown. I am sure there will be fatalities, but not even close to what could have occurred.

Funny thing, the nastiest places I have ever seen in the deep south looked like paradise compared to some of the sights you see from a train window between Washington DC and NYC especially once you get north of Wilmington.

9-13-2008 Rescue crews comb coastal Texas for Ike victims

Bridge City and downtown Orange were under up to 8 feet of water and rescue teams in dump trucks were plowing through in an effort to reach families trapped on roofs and inside attics.

In Louisiana, Ike's storm surge inundated thousands of homes and businesses. In Plaquemines Parish, near New Orleans, a sheriff's spokesman said levees were overtopped and floodwaters were higher than either hurricane Katrina or Rita.

"The storm surge we're experiencing, on both sides of the Mississippi River, is higher than anything we've seen before," Maj. John Marie said.

Finally my internet access is up. A lot of transformers blew around the area, at first I thought it was lightning, but the blue flashes were actually from the power lines. Fortunately, my neighborhood has underground power cables, however the older neighborhoods aren't faring as well.

The worst is for Southeast Texas, where people won't have AC because of the power outages.

My college is supposed to reopen on Wed, but I can't imagine anything returning to "normal" until next week or so given the widespread outages.

people that stayed are lucky it was far less then they thought it would be. w hile i have no sympathy for them i am glad it was not so bad.

Why is this Judge Emmett guy called upon for so much?

Does he trump the Mayor?

Maybe Houston has a weak mayor system where the mayor has little power.

The "County Judge" in Texas isnt a traditional judge in msot counties. County Judges in Texas dont have to be lawyers. The County Judge is the chief administrator for a county. The Commissioners Court, isnt your typical court. Its the policy making body for the County. Its slightly more complex. County Judges in some counties do act as judges, but in most they do not. They have seperate County Courts at Law that handle it.

Harris county being extremely has County Courts at Law, and special Probate Courts. Hon.
Hon. Ed Emmett is the Harris County Judge. He oversees the county Houston is in. He is the chieft administrator for Harris County, which is why hes getting more air time.

In Texas the Govt breakdown is like this. Atleast in terms of administrative wise.
Local -> County -> Council of Governments -> State

Take Lubbock, TX for example.

There is the Local Govt, which is ran by the Mayor of Lubbock, the City Manger, and the City Council. Then theirs the County which is run by the County Judge and the Commissioners Court. Then Lubbock is part of the South Plains Council of Government, which is ran by a Director hired by a board. CoG's work with all the counties in their region so the counties can work together on common projects(healthcare for the poor in rural areas, emergency response, etc). Then of course there is the State.

I dont remember off hand what type of system Houston uses, but weak Mayors usually have a strong city manager.

For my explanation on the Hon. Ed. Emmitt see above.

Where I live we have a weak mayor but also a weak city manager. The city manager does only administrative things, and has no authority over the city councel and no one can veto anything of the councel. The councel authority is supreme.

Then they shouldn't have a Mayor.
