power went out at 3 am here.

edit: from radar it looks like we're about halfway done

edit2: green flashes on the horizon, more transformers going up?

Most likely. Are you on your UPSes now?

UPS for the dsl and the router, notebook with some batteries for me. i've got a couple more UPSes that may be suitable for running the notebook if it wears down.

I'm surprised your internets are working while the power's out.

underground phone lines maybe? dunno what the boxes in the field need, though. probably also just uses the underground phone lines for voltage.

in terms of rain the worst of it, at the moment, is on the west and south sides of this storm.

i'm starting to get rain on the other window. all night i've had it on the NW facing window, now i'm getting it on the SW facing window.

centerpoint says that almost no customers served by overhead lines are getting service, just about all 2 million customers. a meter is a customer, so that's almost 4 million people.

It's pretty amazing that they are about 100% out of service (for the customers using overhead lines). The Centerpoint spokesperson said it will take weeks to get power back to everyone, but of course many people won't have to wait that long.

When we had our 'canes in 04 the phone never went out in any of them, if your using DSL you might be OK..

Houston in very heavy rain on backside of the storm now.

Not a lot of reports of wind speeds because most of the stations that had anemometors have broken. Similar to what happened with Katrina.

Water is down too.

Houston Mayor was just on.

If they can get power to a key pump station soon he said would be OK but need to get generators to it.

Galveston 911 reports around 5,000 calls for help

Houston 1,200 calls for help.

in a few more hours the winds will die enough for aircraft to start looking for the people on the roofs and floaters etc

i sure hope it isn't too bad, but i expect the rescue people to be very busy for the next few days

According to the CNN & Weather channel.

The storm surge was much less than expected - under 17'
Also the storm did not strengthen and picked up forward speed.

Came in as a Cat 2 and rumbling along at 20+ mph.

I have no power. I'm running my laptop off a car battery booster and invertor, and using EVDO. They're saying at least 2 weeks without power...

Balinese room which was a state landmark that has been there forever was destoyed on Galveston Island.

Camera shots from Seawall road show no businesses along it standing.

There were shots of people having hurricane parties on patio bars along there.

No word of what happened to the people that were there.

College Station is fine. Electricity and internet is still up. My parents called me from there home phone an hour ago, so it looks like Kingwood/Humble still has power.

Looks like one of the walls has became stationary over north Houston where my home is. Hopefully there isn't much flooding.
