ok got HD TV hooked up this morning. they used a DVI-HDMI cable with a DVI to HDMI switch (well it changed dVI connect to HDMI).

does that effect the picture? or should i just swap that to straight HDMI cable (got one coming form monoprice)

I am wondering why they did that.
It shouldn't affect it, maybe a bit or two. :p
You try to minimize extra connections though in electronics.

I asked him why they did it. he said since not all HDTV's come with HDMI they do this so they have the right cable.

since they come with either DVI or HDMI and component.

but i have a 6ft HDMI cable from monoprice comeing. i guess i could use the DVI one to hook up my computer. hmmm a 37 inch monitor!

Is this the Dish 622 receiver? I just got mine installed yesterday, and same thing, and I was wondering same as you :p
But after watching some stuff last night, I can't see how there'd be much difference.

DVD player might only do 480p through component, that's how I have mine hooked up.

You also may need to put it on an HD enabled component input.
They have so/so thick component cables at walmart made by Phillips, I use them and have no problem and I couldn't really tell you if they have noise :p.

Related question.... my dvd player claims to be progressive scan - DVD-910 from denon. But my TV, a Samsung HL-S6187w, always shows 480i as the input signal. It's only got component video out (no HDMI)... and there's no obvious setting to turn 480p on. Thoughts?

Edit: montypythizzle may have answered that question, researching!

Probably the only difference would be that you can't pass audio.

I got some going from computer/dvdplayer to my receiver w/ component switching along with component from ps2 and then them from receiver to tv
its clear as hell so... and only at 480i it seems better than that :p

Why would you need that didn't you just get dish HD?
But look for ATSC antennas
