oh and anyone know of any cheap HD antenas? are there something like rabbit ears that work?

Why would you need that didn't you just get dish HD?
But look for ATSC antennas

local channels. thats it. so if i can pick something up for cheap i would snag it.

Look for something like this:

Oddly enough, my cable looks better hooked up using component (i tested both).

Check your cable box. Match it's output with your displays native resolution. You may have to get into the service menu to do this.

It's been my experience that almost all cable techs haven't a clue about HD. I've seen many, many, many people that show me their "glorious HD".

Dude, that's not HD. Your cable box isn't even outputing hd. Gimme that remote, this won't take a sec...

Yeah, same experience here. Cable tech came in, put on cable box, told him to connect the component cables to the HD input, he did. Well, he said my inputs were broke, immediately I laughed at him in my head. I told him to make the box output HD, is that a hard task?
Well, he did get it working after going into the service menu. (of course I remembered how to get in there :p) LOL I switched it from 480p to 1080i as soon as he left....
