YAGT: Where has all the ammo gone?

So, I've been to multiple stores over the past 2-3 months and there hasn't been a single box of rimfire or centerfire ammo to be found. Not even frickin' .22LR. Online I'm seeing boxes of crappy Federal (normally about $15-18) going for $45. Why the heck is going on? I can at least comprehend people stockpiling 7.63 or 5.56, but .22LR...really?

I can't go the range because there isn't any ammo and I won't pay more than $20 for a box of 500 22LR. Stop stockpiling people! They aren't taking our guns, especially not our .22s.

When all the other ammo was in short supply everyone started buying 22LR firearms along with all the 22 ammo.

Artificial shortage created by panic buying. To be honest, at this point, if I saw boxes of .22LR on sale for their typical price, I'd buy a few extra boxes. Too much of a hassle looking for it next time you need some.

DHS

Just 2 short years ago shooting was a cheap sporting activity, now its past greens fees at all the golf courses in my area.

Agree with mr pizza, it's panic buying and artificial shortage.

With Obama and all the publicized shootings going on, there has been an endless urge of rush buying when something rears its head.

One positive, this has resulted in most "panic buyers" to have already bought shit, and chances are they won't keep stockpiling stuff they already panic bought. Some may even start selling it back on gunbroker and ebay once all the smoke clears.

Once the second hand market starts coming back, ammo manufacturers will be slow to react and will continue to pump out panic buyor amounts of ammo.

At some point, supply will vastly outweigh demand, and then THATS when we should pounce!

It can be found just not at good prices unless you want to camp out at your local Wally World when they unload their trucks:\

Give it a few months and things will return to normal, even now I know I can get reasonably priced .40 and .380 online, soon 9mm and .45 will come back as well...which is good cause I'm damn low on 9mm:\

I've got about 100 rounds of 9mm FMJ and 30 rounds of 9mm JHP. I've been trying to find ammo locally for the past 6 months almost and all I can find is shot shells. =\

I really don't want to spend 0.65/round for 5.56 yet though. :( That's the most "reasonable" I've seen it in the last month. I'd like 0.45/round or less.

Haven't you heard? People camp out at gun shows so they can mad rush to the vendors as soon as the gate's open. Probably the only place to buy ammo atm.

Nervous nellies bought it all up.

And most of that stuff will never be shot, just sit in a basement and go bad over the next 30 years.

I wonder if it is economically feasible to manufacture ammo in a garage-type facility during times like these.

You mean people camp out at Wal-Mart...I've actually been lucky enough to catch some since they put it the 3 box limit, have picked up over 1k of .45 and 700 of 9mm in the last 2 months...shared with my friends who couldn't make it

You need cases, lead, powder, and primers.
Which have also been bought up like mad. At least one of those will be unavailable for you.

My local WalMart has 12ga 00 buck in stock, tons of 20ga, and also .30-06, .270, 28ga, and .380. They had some .45 but it was spendy ($45 for 100rds). No .22, .223, .40, 9mm..

And probably 10,000 permits to legally start up manufacturing..

Not if you keep it all. :p
