Nah, I'm a software developer. I suppose something that could be used for CCW would be a bonus, but I've got a Sig P238 covering that for the moment.

Honestly I'm kinda interested in everything gun-related to a degree. My gun collection is rather small at the moment, just a Springfield Commander 1911, the P238 and a Marlin Model 60.

These grips

Or this 229

Now I have a 229 Stainless Elite, the same as the picture, and the grips are wide. If you have small to medium hands you should definitely try before you buy. Sig has E2 grips that are pretty slim but I don't care much for them.

With $1000 I'd get a good .357 revolver and a good bolt action .22 rifle. You should be able to get say a Ruger GP100 for < $600 and a CZ 452/455 for < $400.

The model 60 is already a 22 though isnt?

Theres a ton of options to pick from for 1000. I do like the sound of a GP100 or a revolver of some sort. Just fun to have 🙂 For another gun id go something like a Svage bolt or Remington bolt gun. The R700 ADL is a good beginning gun that can be upgraded down the road to be pretty much totally custom minus the action.

If i had the 1k and had the three guns listed i would go for a revolver of some sort. Then get a bolt action that fits your price range left over.

People should have seen this coming...I sure as hell did.

Like anything once a "cat is out of the bag" things take off. The Sig brace at first was a good thing. But soon as it grew in popularity and pretty much was sold for the sole purpose of a "legal" stock for a pistol people had to know the ATF would crack down on it

Which jig and lower did ya use if you dont mind me asking? Just use a drill press? I keep going back and forth on doing one.

ares armor 80% lower, forged and anodized, as well as the ares armor jig - very well setup, very easy to use. used a milling machine. a drill press is also doable, but a mill is way easier, especially if you need to retouch any particular areas.

Is there any point to an 80% lower other than staying off "the man's" record books? As long as you're not building anything that would need an NFA stamp, there is no requirement to report to anyone that you built a gun, right?

That seems awfully silly to me, if it is indeed the reason. No one is coming to take your gun because you bought a serialed lower...

Off the books is most justification for them, the other is to say you built it beyond just putting together a completed lower...

Yeah but it is more of a plinker (albeit a great one). Since he didn't really mention any strong desire to do hunting or long range shooting a .22 will let him put lots of rounds downrange to learn rifle shooting without having to worry about centerfire ammo prices.

ask New Yorkers how that's working out for them.

prettymuch these two. it is pretty cool to do it yourself. a real interesting challenge (if i had real machining skills) would be to do a 0% lower. or hell, do the entire firearm.

What do you guys think of this? = http://palmettostatearmory.com/inde...pper-w-bcg-and-charging-handle/category/4458/

Questions:

1) Do I need to get the special stamp because of the short barrel?

2) Can get get this upper (AR 47) to go with this AR 15 lower? = http://palmettostatearmory.com/inde...ravo-lower-no-magazine-black-1/category/4282/

My understanding is:

  • You do not need a stamp just to order the upper.
  • However, if you wish to attach that upper to the linked lower, you will need a stamp (using it with a pistol lower requires no stamp).
  • If you attach the upper to that lower before you have the stamp, you're in deep shit with the ATF (if you get caught).

Edit: I've no experience with the AR-47s personally. I'm looking at building a suppressed SBR in the not too distant future but it will probably be in .300 BLK.

so if i'm reading that right, if you use it as a brace as intended, it's fine, but if you use it against your shoulder as a stock, you need the $200 stamp tax?

Correct. Because the device fulfills its design role, it is not illegal to buy and use for the intended design purpose without need of a tax stamp. I doubt that will go away any time soon. Anyone looking to purchase such a brace for a pistol to use the brace as a shoulder stock needs to get a tax stamp. Basically if you talk about it, then yo go directly to jail, do not pass go, and do not collect $200 because you should have paid the $200 first!

And here comes the lawsuit

I would agree that the store holds some responsibility, but I can't say that I'm not a little happy that this guy won't be a cop anymore

Agreed. If I owned that guns store I would fire that employee and whoever left the gun loaded. That said, why did the cop have his finger in front of the barrel anyway? Was he trying to feel the rifling? Lol.

Simple negligence. Although I feel sure that the dude will win the lawsuit. I'd be willing to bet that this was a used gun that was never inspected when the store bought it. The alternative - that they allowed someone to load a new gun in the store - is really even worse.

So anyone noticed anything cool from Shot Show?

Couple things that have sparked my interest so far are

-Shaolin Rifleworks 308AR. Not cheap but the guys sound like they know what the are doing. 1/2" MOA at 100 yards seems hard but they claim to do it in "real world and on 5 targets". I went ahead and emailed them since 2900 actually isnt a bad price for a custom AR especially when the components alone are 60-70% of the cost.

-Magpuls Rem700 stock. Been wanting to do a 300blackout bolt gun for a while now. This might actually give me the motivation to build one up.

Other than those i havent really seen anything im to excited about. Seen lots of "new" ar parts (ie just new manufacturers making rails, ect)

Yep.

1. MOS - Factory milled slides from Glock.
2. POTENTIALLY single stack 9mm from Glock
3. Sig Sauer releasing suppressors in 2015
4. P229 suppressor ready (suspect raised sights)

the new glock pmags and the d-60 are interesting

a not shit hi-cap rotary could be neat

beyond that it will allow you to blow thru 20 bucks in ammo in about a minute....
