Take a look at the views this thread has....people are reading.

Oh, I know. That's why I tend to just go at it blog-style sometimes. People have a wide range of tastes and preferences, and it's hard to really know what tickles your fancy until you shoot it. It's nice getting the experiences of people that I have some trust in...well, I trust a lot of them more than the posters on most internet forums, at least. 😀

I finally shot the pseudo-Colt today after two failed attempts (first time, no ammo, second time, range has started closing an hour earlier than normal). First impressions: excellent. What a lovely little cap gun.

I loaded three rounds on the first try and fired at the center of a silhouette at 5m. Oh shit! Now, 15ft isn't much, but hey, that's a <1.5" grouping there...

...in his right lung.

After about 40 rounds, it got interesting. Six rounds can be safe-ish on this gun; hammer can be decocked without the firing pin coming to rest on a primer. But it still relies on the shooter not effing up. So I was loading five. Once I started loading said five rounds, issues occurred. The firing pin hits the primers so hard that they can deform and catch a little raised spot at the edge of the firing pin hole (from many firing pin impacts). The solution is easy- a little emory cloth or similar on that raised spot. But also, I'm hoping replacing (or even just filing it a bit) the firing pin will lead to less deformation of the primers because a more precise, less sledgehammer-like impact. Might see if I can get a slightly lighter mainspring, also...

edit: To clarify, empty brass was hanging as the empty casings rotated past the chamber to be ejected at first. Then, one got so hinged on a just-fired round that I ended up with the whole cylinder jammed. While coming back with the hammer for the last live round...yep, had to pull the cylinder with a live round in the gun and the hammer unable to properly engage half-cock. Not fun.

so its not going to be the gun everyone wants them to make

typical :awe:

I'm not sure it's the gun everyone wants them to make. Everyone else already makes a single stack 9mm. I'll admit it would be popular, but I'd rather they make something more interesting. Like carbines that take Glock magazines, or a 10mm long slide.

How do I clean my gun of all the CLP to try Frog Lube? Gun is Sig P226 if it matters.

Just use the other lubricant when it's needed. I seriously doubt you're going to notice any functional difference between CLP and "Frog lube" though. And it's silly to clean off one lubricant just to apply another.

I never found that reloading was $0.15 per round. I'd be reloading 30-06, 308, 303, 44, 45, 41 (favoring the rifle calibers since they're more expensive.)

A. I don't count the price of brass in the cost of revolver rounds, since those casings last practically forever and never get lost. So the $0.15 is only bullet, powder, and primer. On rifles it depends, if you're using a bolt-action and neck size only bras will last a very long time, unfortunately for semi-autos even if you don't lose it it has a limited life.

B. Prices are inevitably higher for rifle rounds where you have to use jacketed bullets

C. You don't have to (and shouldn't) start off with 6 different calibers. You can get started with a single stage press for one caliber for $200 or less. Each additional caliber is about $40-75 for a set of die.

D. Obviously reloading isn't for everyone. 😛

This is on your SAA replica/clone, right? It sounds like you need to attack that raised spot, not the firing pin. It's not unusual for the primer to get forced back a little bit when the round is fired, and when that happens it will tend to drag against the frame as the cylinder rotates.

Rifle prices finally dropping back into the realm of pre-hook scare. Been saving a bit and might be picking something up soon 🙂 Although frikking ammo for some calibers is still stupidly scarce. Was out at the range the other weekend and shooting my ruger 10/22 and people were looking at my boxes of 22 like they were seeing a unicorn or something.

.22 is still crazy but .223/5.56 is finally come back down to reasonable prices though.

I love how .22 being 5-10 cents per round, which is admittedly insane compared to before, is somehow expensive. 😛

It isn't coming back down..ammo is on a general upward trend, and today could be the cheapest it will ever be.

Yeah, I already took it down with some 600grit sandpaper. I'm not too worried about that, for sure...that hole would have to get a lot more worn out for me to worry. But what I was saying about the firing pin is that it's simply grown in diameter over the years and lost its point. So instead of looking more like the end of a knitting needle, it looks like a flat pin punch- way too much surface area contacting the primer.

Here are my casings from yesterday-

Unfortunately, my dumb ass seems to have broken something when I was trying to force the cylinder around. The lock at the bottom of the frame that engages the outside of the cylinder is not retracting. I believe that's a common weak spot in Colts and straight-up clones (newer guns like the Rugers may have refined it a bit).

Also, could Merad or anyone else that reloads recommend me some starter gear that I could use for .45? I've never seriously looked into reloading, but it seems to make sense to start here. Just wanting to see what I'd have to spend.

I think prices for everything are on a downward trend. You can get 1k of brass cased 223 for 350 delivered now without it being snatched up immediately (as in consistently in stock). 9mm is around $15 a box of 50 with some slight peaks under. 12 gauge never really shot up in demand so isn't probably going anywhere. 22 is the last holdout at scare prices. The market seems to be bearing $40-$45 for a box of 500. Almost not even worth shooting over centerfire to save money.

I think brass 223 could hit 300/1k again. Unless there is some giant disaster or school shooting again, I think it will continue the downward trend. I just picked up a gen 4 glock 20 and am looking at 10mm prices as well as 40s&w. PSA has some fiocchi 40sw for 15 a box before shipping right now. That is pretty good.

Oh, on the topic of ammo prices, I meant to mention/ask: Anyone else's local Walmart put a limit on ammo? Mine did. The shelves are full now. YMMV.

I don't believe the local Walmarts here have done that. I have a coworker who's been making a killing reselling the ammo on backpage. While I don't agree with what he does at all, it is amusing reading all the hate emails he gets.

Walmart policy has been to limit to 3 boxes per caliber per day.

They are intentionally selling below market as a PR move, which is great I guess. But 3 boxes is as useful as.....

I would be interested in details. This is currently a commonly repeated statement, but when breaking down numbers, no longer makes sense.

If there's anything you want me to ask, let me know and I'll ask him. I haven't a clue on how he does it all, other than buying at Walmart and I think for a bit there it was BassPro.

All of the Walmarts i've been to in the past month have lifted their limits...

I'd just be interested in what caliber, how much sold, and the selling price.....

While internet/gun show ammo is still higher than Walmart, I just find it hard to believe that you could currently flip enough to make it worth standing in line and possibly getting only 3 boxes, even if they are bricks of .22.

I'll ask him tomorrow.. I know that at one point he was buying it off a guy that worked there in more than just 3 boxes. How much and how often I couldn't say. I was with him once when he picked it up on the way to lunch.

Edit: That was last year though, no clue if he's still doing that.
