Finished my build almost two weeks ago, just been lazy about uploading the picture.

Still to add: Optics, Vertical Foregrip, Light. Already know what I am getting for each one, just a matter of securing the funds.

Looks very nice, but I still don't see the obsession with them.

I guess it's a hobby thing, can still one shot most things from 100-500 yards with one of these, and have other things for in close I guess.

Not being rude, no offense intended.

Nice work on it.

Thanks. I don't take offense...guns are all about personal preference. You sir have a classic look with yours, something which I respect.

Oh man...I don't think I would want to choose between the 2.

I like the look of ARs. I LOVE how you can customize them however you want. Being able to build one from the ground up is just amazing.

But can you really beat good old wood and steel? The feel, the weight, the look are almost perfect.

I vote for both!

so what if you do miss tho......:p

the AR is a fast followup and still effective in close ;)

that's one of the draws, its a good all around rifle IMHO

nothing wrong with a classic bolt action though, nothing at all!

10 yards at night with the CM9 went pretty well

It's a familiarity thing with them since they're in use by our military, have a ton of aftermarket parts, and everyone tends to have them since they're representative of "USA"

I don't though, can't stand them to be honest. I like to be different/have weapons that are "exotic" since I find them more interesting. I generally don't like American firearms.

So besides the AK, what else is in the same price category?

They are pretty cool. You can make a dozen different guns that each have their own use but share the same layout, ergonomics and many common parts. Also it's like Barbies for guys. :awe:

I can't agree more. I owned an AR15, didn't like to shoot it. At all.

In the end, I prefer my 1903, Lee Enfield, Garand and such. I need to take some nice photos of all of them. :D

Are you talking about other guns with similar lego-minded attachments, or other guns in general that can be had for the same money?
I think he means other similar type rifles, semi-auto, magazine fed, relatively cheap ammo, etc...even the AK isn't as "lego-minded" as the AR, but it's a similar platform, pretty much every other rifle I can think of in the same class are much more expensive

Well a lot of the guns that I like/think are cool are pretty expensive. There is the Tavor, the Sig 556, Hk91 Clones (the only one of these I own, I LOVE it)...etc etc etc

I see many more people "Sniperizing" their AR15s instead of getting a Rem700/Bolt action like Mongrel and putting a scope on it. At least that's how it is at the range I go to, you're either a hunter, have an AR15, have a pistol, or you're a weirdo like me and have other guns.

I would LOVE to get myself a Tavor...and a PS90 for that matter...but for the price an AR is hard to beat and offers a lot of flexibility for those of us who don't have the funds to get the exotics...you're not a weirdo, you just have more disposable funds than the rest of us poor suckers:\

The sad thing is people spend so much on modding their AR15s that they could have just spent that all on a different gun entirely...Especially when you factor in the AR15.com guys and their "ACOG/Aimpoint or Bust!" mentality.

A Tavor would be cool to have but I'm a little leery of Semi-Auto rifles. I tend to go through ammo with them fast with nothing to show for it. Bolt action/C&R types tend to leave a bruise/slow my rate of fire down enough that I stop shooting before I run out of ammo :D.

Luckily my PTR91 bruises me every time I shoot it since "cheap" steel cased ammo for it is .50+ a round.

Yeah the ones that spend that much just have a hard on for AR's...but a cheap bastard can build one for a hair over $500...you'd be hard pressed to find anything other than an AK for that price in the same basic class

Nice. My AR is very similar like yours. Tell me more about the sling and the sling rings. Brand, price, and where to purchase.

It's a Winchester Model 70 Sporter Varmint in .223, but yeah very similar.

I used to have a couple Remington Gold Medallions, one was a 7 Millimeter Remington Magnum, that thing was pretty beastly.

Made a 30-06 even look a bit wimpy.

;)

I used to be married to an M-16 named Jessica years ago, he he, if ya know what I mean.

yep....I was under 500 till I added an optic, still right around 500 now

sure a surefire ETC pushes it up higher, but they aren't married to the gun

That's basically what the Big Dots are. Think "lollipop". The front sight is a circle and the rear sight is a vertical bar. I thought they would be better, but I guess I'm just too ingrained with the old 3 dot setup. :p

Straight 8's is a pretty nice night sight setup, faster than 3 dot for me but still pretty nice for normal light as well

I think that was the point being made earlier, an AR is a pretty cheap platform to get into and can be modularly upgraded as funds are available, something hard to find in any other rifle out there...being relatively cheap to feed and just downright fun to shoot makes them hard to resist:D

Same here. I like ARs (I have a rifle and am building a .300BLK pistol right now) and modern rifles, but man I dig the wood and steel guns. I'll probably never trade away or sell my M1 Garand, and dig my Mosin Nagant. I really want a K98k, among a myriad other older military guns. Jesus I need a C&R license, I keep forgetting to do the paperwork.

By the way, nice AR FallenHero. What foreend/rail is that? Looks great. I wanted a 7"-8" keymod rail for my pistol but the ones I did see were all longer (Noveske NSR, Wheaton Arms, Midwest Industries, etc).

I took that as a knock on the rifle cost, which really, optics aren't part of the rifle :p

I owned an ACOG. I won't knock the optics - they were quite good, and BAC did work. I will however say it wasn't worth that cost, to me. But again, the AR15 just didn't do it for me. No modern rifle, really does. The most modern rifle I'm likely to own is an HK91/PTR91 or an FAL. I'm far more likely to put my money into owning a Lee Enfield 1917, Arisaka, Springfield trapdoor, Spencer carbine or something like that.

But I'm also the person who watches people train with their AR15s to move and shoot and whatnot and laugh at them - people who "train like the military." I have a friend who went to Nepal and Thailand a couple years ago. While in Thailand with a medical team, they were being escorted by an off duty cop who checked out an MP5 and a Glock of some form (17 or 19, I forget which.) from the armory. They WERE shot at a couple of times, and my friend (who knows enough about guns to become a gunsmith...) was handed the Glock. IIRC, he said there was a point where he was in cover behind a rock, returning fire. His reaction when he was back in the US was "people who think they're ready for the worst really don't have any clue whatsoever."

My least favorite part of any gun community is the people who buy AR15/10s or AK47/74s, go tacticool and then want to open carry the gun around. In other words, AR15.com is my least favorite part of the gun community. I truly wish AR15s would lose their popularity (and all the other modern offerings - AK47s, SCARs, Tavors) - I have a strong suspicion that if that would happen, the current push we see for gun control would be greatly diminished.
