YAGT: OMG I love guns

Which Herters caliber was that? I only buy their 7.62x39 Herters, and they shipped 3 cases to my door for $250 each, which was lower than SGAmmo, Ammoman and AIMSurplus.

9mm. They have some new TNJ (nylon jacket) ammo that I was looking at when it was $13 for a couple days earlier this month. I'm guessing a few people started buying it and they jacked it up to about $16.50/box.

Cabelas is generally expensive absent a sale, but I noticed at least in their 9mm that prices went from expensive to stupid almost overnight.

Well, I got to hit a range up this weekend. Called a few ranges, and most of them were booked. One that was close and not full was also the most expensive one. $25 just to be there, $3-$5 a target you must buy, and you must buy their ammo. $40 a box of 50 for 9mm or .380 acp. Yah pretty expensive.

Still, I wanted some practice so I did the dumb thing in a way and went to the over priced range. It was a nice indoor handgun range though. 45 yard was max range.

I fired my Taurus PT92, PT111, and my sig p238 for the first time there. Did 50 rounds in each (yah $120 for all that I know). The PT92 was just nice to shoot. I had one FTE on the very first shoot. After that nothing. The sight was lined up great and I was punching holes exactly where I wanted them. However, with the last 10 rounds or so, I had 4 or 5 shots not reset the trigger back at all. I would pull to shoot, it would fire, I would let off the trigger for it to reset but the trigger wouldn't go back. So I had to pull the trigger out and then it would be good to shoot again. Very strange and not sure what causes that.

I switched over to the PT111. I will say, the sights on it need adjustment. A bit to the left and low. I knew it typically shots low from reviews with cheap 115g ammo. Maybe the proper 124g ammo would be more accurate. Only problem I had with the gun was that if I shot too fast, the gas from the shot would pop the magazine out. I had it happen 3 times. The first time it happened I thought it was my fault in hitting the mag release or something. So I cleared the error, and went at it again. It happened again, but I thought I was paying more attention to not touching the mag release. So after that second attempt, I called the range master over to watch me and see if he noticed I was pressing the mag release. While he was watching the mag popped out and my fingers were no where near the mag release (I was almost comical about it). We both made sure the mag was secure before I started firing fast while he was watching. Not sure what the problem is with it. I can't pull the mag when I secure it manually. I'll need to go to a range where I can use my own ammo and see what happens once I put a few hundred rounds through it. If it continues I'll have to have Taurus look at it I guess.

For the last gun I used my p238. That gun, for as small as it was, shot awesome. I only had 2 FTE's but both were when I was using the colt mustang mag I bought and not the sig mags. The colt mustang mag gave me a fte on the last shot both times I tried it.

The other thing was with my p238, I decided to do a practice CHL qual test. The lady in the lane next to me with her husband was doing her actual qualifying test for her CHL. Her husband was a cop too and she was a doctor. Anyhow, I was watching her do a few practice runs before the pre-qual. I saw what she was doing with having the target machine flip the target to the side and back out to be shot every few seconds at varying ranges. So with the sig p238, I asked the range master if I could also set my machine up the same way for shits and giggles. The way the qualification works for CHL here is the following:

3 yard line - 20 shots:

1 shot in 2 seconds, 5 times
2 shots in 3 seconds, 5 times
5 shots in 10 seconds, once

7 yard line - 20 shots:

5 shots in 10 seconds, once
1 shot in 3 seconds, 5 times
2 shots in 4 seconds, once
3 shots in 6 seconds, once
5 shots in 15 seconds, once

15 yard line - 10 shots:

2 shots in 6 seconds, once
3 shots in 9 seconds, once
5 shots in 15 seconds, once

A max possible score is 250 and only 170 is needed to pass. The lady next to me did good at 223 points. For me trying it for the first time? I got a 250. The guy at the range said he never seen anyone do that. The cop next to me said he hadn't seen anyone do that or thought even he could shoot a perfect score. 😀 All done with a little p238 handgun.

The guy in the other lane next to me saw the score and bought me box to see if I could shoot everything in the center still with that p238 at the max 45 yard range. I still did with 4 inch grouping at 45 yards with that p238. Using winchester white box .380 acp ammo. I'm a bit proud of my self 😛

Side note, I also stopped by Bass Pro shop on Sunday before heading to the range (I was also checking to see if I could use their cheaper range but they were booked). Earlier in the week I had called them to ask about Ruger 10/22's being in stock. The guy said that the last time they got some was on the previous Sunday. So as a gamble I thought I'd stop by there Sunday and see if they got any. Because of massive traffic problems due to a road closure near my house, I got there several hours after the store had been opened. I still went thinking maybe they hadn't all been bought. As luck would have it, the shipment just got delivered as I got to the store. I grabbed a number at the counter and told the clerk I was looking for a Ruger 10/22. He went back to the back and said they got 3 of the takedown versions in but 2 were spoke for. Turns out 2 were being bought by employee's of those. So I nabbed the last one for the price of $329. It was still cheaper than MSRP which was $399 for that. I also wanted that takedown model and so it all worked out perfect for me.

Humble, you make me glad i dont buy taurus guns. Seems like all i ever hear is problems about them. Sucks since they make some decent guns too.

Sounds like a nice range though! Weird on the CHL thing but guess its different. But I'd love to have a range with targets that could vary range and the such. (automatically, not just me doing it) I take it the scoring is just max points for hitting the target and not X points for bulleyes X for second ring, ect?

Still nice shooting! I dont even know of any indoor ranges around here that are 45 yards long. Hell the one i generally go to is only 16 yards (50 feet)

good lord $40 for a box of their ammo. 😱

i guess everything is bigger in texas.

makes me appreciate the open range up in the hills of Santa Barbara. back in college you just drove up to the mountains and in a small box canyon there was a county authorized shooting area. no target boards, no lanes, no supervision, just shoot and dont kill anyone. the place doubled as a garbage dump as people brought up old tv, appliances, furniture to shoot to pieces.

To be fair, these were brand new guns and never fired before. The PT92 shot awesome. The PT111, shot OK. Mostly I didn't like the sight on it. The magazine problem. Not sure what the hell that is all about. Going to have to see what is going on there.

However, the lady next to me doing the quals was trying to use her Sig p938 and was having extraction and feed problems constantly. She had to stop and switch guns because her new sig just wasn't working right. She switched to her husband's XD and shot that just fine.

As for the scoring, it's based on rings to center mass of a target. The 5 points is for a 12 inch wide ring. The 4 points is for the outer ring around that. Here's a picture of the target.

B27(green).gif

Anything in the 8, 9, or X ring is 5 points. The 7 ring is 4, and the rest of the target is 3 on the silhouette. Outside the silhouette is zero.

Help me.

I am ready to buy my first gun. Right now I have a 12ga (28" barrel) for shooting trap with friends, but now i'm ready to shoot bullets.
I can't decide on a pistol or rifle, each are fun for different reasons.

Rifle: Savage BTCSS in .223

Pistol: Sig, Kimber or STI 1911.

The 1911 seems like a great gun to have. I might consider one in 9mm to save on ammo, but then it wouldn't be a 1911 would it?

Opinions please or suggest a different firearm.

It is still like that for when I go shoot, I refuse to join the local gun club and go to the local range to be bound by their retarded rules.

I am surrounded by Forest Service and BLM land though. I shoot just about anywhere I want to. We do have a local shooting pit like you describe though, right outside of town at the location of the old city dump. It is fun to take applicances and furniture up there and blow them up with tannerite. Ace hardware keeps tannerite in stock by the case too, which is convenient.

the pt92 trigger issue sounds like it needs some cleaning. if grit or other crap gets in the trigger draw bar parts it could keep the action from resetting.

the pt111 sounds like the mag catch isnt fully engaging. either there is some excess metal keeping it from going into the mag notch or the notch itself isnt to spec. how many mags do you have for it?

Yah, I think some grit may have got down during the shooting into the pt92. I'll look at that later.

As for the pt111, I have the 2 mags it came with. It did the push out on both. I would set it up so I would seat it, try to pull out the mag by hand without pressing the release and couldn't pull it. Then I would shoot and it would come out. so I know it was seated and in there square before firing.

Bass Pro was one of 4 different ranges I went to last week that were completely swamped. Had to go through the 10 minute process of them checking/locking our guns at the front door, then go upstairs to see the 40 people standing around.

Adding insult to injury, the guy then tells me I can't shoot FMJ rifle bullets at the range. Jesus christ.

Pistol. They are so much more challenging, and you have already been shooting a long gun.

Like you say, the 1911 frame isn't really made for 9mm. How about a CZ75 Shadow SAO? Like 1911s, it's single action, has a great trigger, but is built from the ground up for 9mm. My own gun is a regular Shadow, and I'd like to put a SAO trigger in it, but have to stick to DA/SA to keep the gun competition legal.

Thanks. Looks like a nice pistol. I don't mind spending a bit more on the best quality I can get since I don't plan on having a large collection of guns, i'd like to have a few that are the best I can afford.
My budget for this pistol is about $1,300.00 and I MIGHT stretch a bit further if I am convinced. I have been looking at the STI Spartan 6". People have some good things to say about it from what I have gathered. My problem is ignorance. I have no idea whats going on in the gun world, what brands are good etc. I'd like an upper end 9mm pistol and I like the 6" length of the spartan. Don't ask me why, I just figure longer is better, right? That CZ looks sick though.

goddammit. I never had any interest in an AR-type rifle, and then I just came across a youtube video of slide fire stocks and 'bump' firing. Holy shit that looks like fun. And I'm sure everyone at the range would be like OMGWTFBBQ it's a $20,000 AR!

What are you going to use it for? Are you going to want to carry it, or do you want a range toy?

Range toy. No plans to carry since I live in southern california and its hard to get a CCW from what I understand. If that time comes i'll get something suited for that purpose. If someone breaks into my house (unlikely) and I actually have an opportunity to use the gun, then i'll shoot the guy with it. I assume a 9mm would be enough to make someone say "oh shit" and try to run away at least after being hit.
Anyway, I am looking for a range toy thats accurate and fun to shoot without breaking the bank on ammo.

STI is a good brand. I haven't seen the Spartan in a 6" model. They have some other models that are 6".

The extra inch, only gives you an extra 20 to 30 fps with a 9mm. http://ballisticsbytheinch.com/9luger.html

The Spartan is their basic gun. It's made in the Philippines with some STI parts. All the rest of their guns are made in Texas.

9MM is fine for home defense if you can aim and you use the proper ammunition. Practice ammo on the bottom of pic, ammo that is loaded in a magazine next to the bed on the right.

Although if you have a larger caliber handy as well, that would be the one to grab if you have to.

PS if anyone who has been reading the thread wonders why I hate the run on pistol ammo, you might be able to see why in this pic.
