I've owned Mustangs and I've driven my friend's G35 Coupe. The G35 is a much much nicer car. It has class while the Mustang...well, it's a Mustang. I don't know how the new automatics in the Mustang are but they used to be utter garbage. I'd never buy an automatic Mustang GT.

Still, if you're thinking of getting a convertible it's hard to find fault in a $30k convertible with 300hp.

Although I like Mustangs... this shouldn't even be a question. Mustangs depreciate by half in 5 years.

G35. I simply couldn't live with a 2 door sports coupe any more in my life. The V8 rumble is nice, but after the honeymoon is over you start to realize that two big, heavy doors, a lack of backseat, and the fit and finish of the car start to annoy you on a daily basis.

I can't stand sport coupes for the simple fact that they are a MAJOR PITA to get in and out of in tight parking spaces. I'm a pretty thin guy, but I still had to do some contorsion acts to get in and out of a 350Z and a mustang rental that I had a few times.

I could really couldn't care less about the car being an icon or having other people I know own one.

I'd go for the American muscle. Though I agree, the lack of a sunroof option (which has been true for far too many years in Mustangs) really sucks. The back seat issue is a non-issue for me. I don't care. I won't be back there (though you do have to move the seat up a bit usually). And I don't care if others complain about it. Children? They're small...they'll fit.

Most people here will recommend the G35. People in these forums, given the types they typically are, are skewed towards refinement rather than muscle. I'm sure I'm in the minority being a muscle car fan. So I guess the final question is, do you want muscle or refinement? Don't let us make the choice for you.

I've been looking at Nissan cars lately as I'm seriously pondering getting rid of my Stratus (unfortunately, I bought it at the 5-6 year mark and it's showing). The three cars I've been looking at are the Altima 3.5SL, Maxima 3.5SL and the (Infiniti) G35x. Although I don't like the fact that America got the G35 over the Skyline (originally, 2008 for the GT-R now), after looking at all three cars, I really enjoy what the G35 has to offer.

Although, if you want a "cheaper" car, you may like the Altima 3.5SL or Maxima 3.5SL. They have a V6 VQ instead of a V8 but they come with a lot of the fancy G35 features as options. I think the only thing you really cannot get is the HDD-based player that the G35 has. So if you'd like to spend a little less money and get a similar car, you can try one of those two (Altima or Maxima). Although, I've never understood why Nissan made two cars so close together (after options). In fact, the Altima ends up having better performance at the 3.5 level and with the same options costs ~3k less.

For me though, the Infiniti website lists the closest Infiniti dealer in Syracuse (a nice hour drive), so I highly doubt I'd get a G35x, although the car is like a mini-Skyline to me 🙁.

EDIT:

As Skotty said and I was going to mention, what exactly you want in a car is a big thing. If you want a comfortable ride to go to work and back, etc... you may want the G35 over the Mustang. If you want something that usually caters toward power (although stock they'd be the same) and not necessarily providing all the nifty gadgets like Nissan does (hence the "lower" comfort level), then you may want the Mustang. It really depends on what you want this car for.

Why would you be comparing a sedan to a coupe any way?

the proper comparisson is the Mustang GT vs the G35 coupe. And the G35 coupe wins hands down. Not even a contest.

i don't like the G35 coupe, not to mention that it is riding on the old platform for another few months (and will probably be sitting close to or above MSRP for several months after that).

when i was buying my last car i looked at the altima and the maxima. i should have bought a maxima, wouldn't be so interested in getting rid of it so quickly.

the reason the two cars are so similar is because the last gen altima was planned to be the maxima, with a different (smaller) car coming as the altima. carlos ghosn came in and told nissan what everyone was saying for years (put a 4 cylinder in the maxima to compete with accord/camry). well, because the max had always been a V6 they decided to make that project into the altima, leaving them without a new maxima.



i should probably rent both and see how they are to live with.

and holy jesus do G35s retain value (though, if i bought the mustang the resale value wouldn't matter because they'd have to pry it from my cold dead hands after the oil dries up)

If you want a back seat, get the G35.

I just got rid of my Mustang. I loved it, great car, very nice handling (surprising given what it is) and an exceptional value. But I was in the market for an everyday car and I should not have let emotion sway me when I bought the Mustang. It just doesn't work well for an everyday driver if you need more utility.

Would I recommend the Mustang for someone who doesn't ever need a back seat? You bet. It's an excellent car dynamically and the chassis and drivetrain more than make up for any shortcomings in the interior. I don't think it's possible to buy a car that offers the same quality of driving experience at anywhere near the Mustang's price. It's just not a very good choice as a "practical" car. As a fun car, it's an unparalleled value. And 300 hp/320 ft-lbs is a lot of fun.

Well, the new redesign G35 sedan pack enough punch (300-268) + its more practical and comfortable. If I'm buying a car, I would buy the G35 in a heartbeat. But it seem like you prefer the Mustang. The Mustang will save you $7k. With that $7k you can change the speakers and do whatever you need to make the car more comfortable.

I think you are set on the Mustang.

On a side note, I think the VQ sound is part of Z and G35 cars driving experience. If you can't stand it, don't bother with it.

Is there no OEM HIDs for the Mustang?
