Neither. Those two cars are a joke. Same with the people that buy Scion.
What would you buy then? Coming into a thread and just saying things are bad mean nothing.

Also, when you reply, tell me which of those cars you have driven.

Personally I would go with a Cobalt SS Stage 2.

241 hp and 218 lb.-ft underrated with a supercharger. Oh, and is 300lb's less then the GTI and about 40lb's less then the Si.

With the longest warranty on powertrain in the industry, I think you are sitting really pretty in it!
Only problem is when you want a new car after 2-3 years, your Cobalt would worth next to nothing compare to Civic and GTi.
The OP said he won't sell for at least 5 years I believe. Buying a car and selling within 2-3 years is foolish.

Right. You have a Civic Si, right? I am now considering it just for the reliability, and looks to an extent... But the GTI's front end and interior is much nicer IMO. Also, it is easy to get plenty of power from it by tuning, but that in turn voids its warranty. Also, I'm not sure how fun manual would be on the 405 freeway 3 years down the road, when I have to commute on the freeway regularly. Traffic is getting worse by the day.

Nope, I have driven both of these cars though and so I have a good feel for them.

How much power do you want? If the Civic's power is fine, don't even factor in possible upgrades. Once you're on the freeway, you won't need any more power and will just want to use the 6th gear so the engine is as quiet as possible.

Have you considered a regular Civic? Maybe that's all you want?

I'd say to go out and test drive a few other cars if you aren't sure.

Power is pretty important to me. I am interested in taking it to the track, for circuit races, or maybe Autocrossing it. The Civic's LSD will help a lot in the twisties, but in a straight line, it is relatively slow.

If I had to choose between the two, I'd go for the Civic. While I think the GTI looks better, VWs are just too unreliable for me to want to buy one. However, I'd personally rather have a WRX or a Mazdaspeed3.

But a chipped GTI can take a WRX and a MS3. Well, a modded WRX can be faster than an STi, but let's not get into that. 😉 I really like the WRX, but the insurance prices are RIDICULOUS!!! They're even higher than WRX STi's! OMFG! (this is because it's cheaper => more punk ass kids buy one and crash it)
