I like corvettes. However; I could never buy one now because what they have become.

I have to disagree with this ...I often view the lower end of the luxury spectrum as pretty good buys so long as you know you are paying a little more for name and image.

Even if I could afford a 911, I might be inclined to just save my pennies and buy a Boxster S instead or even a regular Boxster...if flat out performance and value for your dollar aren't your main criterias then it is a pretty nice car...

Personally I would pick one up used as last I checked they were pretty cheap.

Go for a test drive or at least sit in the car, but have a friend or SO watch you in the car. Ask them if you look like a dipsh!t. Most guys do, sad to say; they're great cars. But you'll probably just look like a pretentious ass, so skip it.

Out of curiosity what have they become? I know they restyled alot to appeal to women but other than that I hadn't heard much, then again I have been out of the car scene for a while. Thanks

I missed that.....

I can't say I have seen any man driving a SLK280 here in Palm Beach County...yet they are usually at my red lights. I see men in the 430 verts, though all the time...no AMG's though. I see a few SL AMGs out downtown, V12 FTW. Those MB SUV's are becoming popular down here lately.

The 993 Turbos topped out at about 180mph, and did 0-60 in 4.5s. None of the Carrera 2's made it to 60 in less than 5 seconds, or went near 200mph.

On the upside, it's the last of the air cooled Porsches, if that sort of thing is important to you.

I'm not sure what you think they've become. I think it's a very good value and a solid competitor in the higher end market. It's also something you can use as a daily driver unlike the Viper and others. Sure I'd rather have a 911 Turbo, but that's out the price range.

maybe he had his models messed up; I dont know the whole 911/993/996 deal...it's watercooled and turns a sub 5 sec 0-60 time factory. its a 2000 model. It's the rear drive version. It's mint and they are asking only $20k for it with less than 50k miles. He needs to sell his current car, but he thinks regardless he will buy one of them.

For me personally I love the opposite Porsche, the 944 Turbo. It could out perform the 911 Turbo in it's day and a reason the plug was pulled. Those that spend 120K on a car don't want a $50k car from the same make to lap them.

Many think 911's are cheap compared to other exotics, but once you add all the options you would want the 911 is no longer a upper mid-5 figure car.

I see them about 50% of my red lights. The jokes about them are profound.

Sit in a club and listen to the chicks as mr corvette valets.

I am not arguing about their performance or bang for the buck. Just the social stigma, outside the bowtie circles.

Yep, that sums it up perfectly. I would go with the Audi TT (although it is pretty much the same, but not as bad I think).

I am not socially insecure.

I really don't want to see myself coming and going at every intersection though. Add that to the fact that corvettes have a HUGE stigma outside car circles and why bother.

Do you drive a corvette? If not what are you driving?

Well, anyone that says a Boxster is a chick car hasn't driven one hard.

I have a 911 and a Boxster.

The 911 is older, raw, stiff, lightweight, louder, faster.

The Boxster handles better, isn't as fast in a straight line, but keeps up with almost anything in the corners, is easier and more comfortable to drive daily, and has a drop top. It also has more storage due to dual trunks, and gets way better gas mileage.

I drive the Boxster more often than the 911, and actually, other than durability while flogging it around a track (air-cooled 911s are built very well for this), the Box does a lot of things better.

So if you're all about going fast in a straight line, sure, it's not fast. But if you want to hang with almost anything outside of supercars on a road that's actually interesting, a Boxster is a great car.

You can PM me with any questions about actually owning one if you want.

Oh, and one comment about the affordability.....

If you get one, take your time and get one with good options. There are some things that make it a much nicer car.

For instance, I have the following options:
Painted Roll Bar
Full Leather Dash
Full Leather Console
Leather Door Panels w/stitching
CD Changer
Sport Suspension
17" Wheels

Added a glass rear window since I have a pre-'03, the plastic ones do look cheap, bleh.

I'd rather have a nice Boxster or Cayman than a base 911, even if the 911 is a touch faster. *

*for a daily driver, my 911, as my fun car, is mostly stripped to save weight

The 911 is an '80 with a ton of work done to it. Newer ones are too heavy, it's going to get the engine out of one anyhow, and already has beefed up brakes/wheels/tires, and the suspension is in progress.

You say that as if a car that drives well can't also be a "chick car."

The Miata is just about as pure a sports car as is out there and yet still, unfortunately, has the stigma of being a chick car

...and I make this observation even though the last car I owned before leaving the states was an S2000...

Chick car-owners unite!

Well, the stigma of Miatas is starting to change. Latest I heard was that Miata were only "for chicks or old dudes that race them" which would be perfectly fine with me.

I tend to agree with the above poster that doesn't put it in with the Beetle, Celica, Cooper (that's debatable though, lots of guys have them), Tiburon, and I'd like to add the Neon (but not the SRT-4, that thing is pretty bad)

probably why being an 80.

even the late 80's brought a ton of improvements...then the 90's.

you should have beefed up tires first, then suspension, then brakes...wheels last.

Chick cars:
VW Beetle
Mini Cooper
Hyundai Tiburon
Toyota Celica (the most recent iteration)

What do these have in common? Look fast and drive slow.

What about a VW Bug looks fast?

And Minis and Celicas are pretty fast for their class (FWD and semi-practical) down a curvy road or around a track

But it handles better than any of those other cars you posted. It's the best one there, hands down on performance.

If you're buying based on image, you should probably skip it, but if you're buying for you and your enjoyment, pull the trigger on the Boxster.
