Every 3-6k miles. Depends on how lazy we're feeling, or if we're about to embark on a thousand mile road trip.

not true. I do the same way despite using synthetic based on advice from professional mechanics here in NYC. They see the innards of car engines every day and note how the sludge builds up in oil pans when you let the oil become too saturated with debris from not changing it often enough.

Admittedly, it is a long-term investment. If you're going to just sell your car in 3-5 years it wouldn't be worth it unless you have some sympathy for whoever takes ownership of your vehicle

edit: and i do my own oil changes too so not sure how jiffy lube would benefit

who the heck changes every 1K-2K miles?
I do. Pushing the engine past spec. Higher shift points than stock. More lift on the rocker arms, lower thermostat, etc etc

I've only seen one or two really old cars ever blow up because they didn't have their oil changed often enough. Most crap out because of transmission issues, cooling system issues, blown headgaskets, and of course a falling apart interior. Chances are you'll trade your car or sell it before you'll ever see the difference. Don't spend more money on expensive oil.

Unless of course you are doing more than just driving to work/soccer practice/grocery store/mall in which case the small amount of money is worth protecting your engine. Good oil perserves gaskets. If you drive your car hard often then it is worth the $25 ($50 for oil and labor if you dont do it yourself) worth of synthetic oil to protect your car.

Color of oil is not an indicator of when to change oil/filter.

The shop I go to uses Mobil Clean 5000 10W40 (which recommends every 5k/6 mo.s), but I do 90% highway so I change closer to 6k miles.

Using Amsoil or Redline full sythetic oils, the filter is changed every 5000 miles, the oil stays in for 20, 000 miles.

Well I change it ever 3000 miles exactly. Not knowing weather this was 2-3k or 3-4k, I voted for die car die. Incidentilly I have been commuting to work on my bike this summer and my car has only gained 100 miles.

On my aircooled I do every 3000 miles because it doesn't have a real oil filter, just a stupid sump screen and magnetic drain plug (although I'm shopping for a good full flow setup).

Other cars I go by the manual, which is 5000-6000 miles. As soon as I use up this valvoline I got (coupons) I'm sticking to Mobil1.

I've been using Castrol Syntec lately, so I'll let it go 5k+.

EDIT: Actually, Syntec Blend, too cheap for the full synthetic. :p

20k is excessive, even for amsoil. When I used it, I found that after about 10-12k (with lab tests), the oil needed to be changed (yes i changed the filter at 5k).
