Damn heh, I realize that's probably what the manual says, but there's no way in hell I would ever leave break-in in for 5,000 miles on a new engine.. :QOriginally posted by: rbloedow

If I spent the money for a new car, I would probably change it every 500 miles, have it analyzed each time, and graph engine wear. When it leveld off, I would know it was broken in and I would then switch to the normal oil regimen.. lol

my old celebrity had 295,000 kms on it when it was finished by a deer.
such a waste, that thing still ran great. it was a 2.8 mpfi eurosport wagon.. great car.

Depends on the car.
My MDX was not supposed to get an oil change for over 5K miles too because they put in some additive to remove contaminants in the oil.

In all seriousness, I'd like to research this more. While one part of me says "Well, the Honda engineers must know what they're doing...", it also goes against all conventional wisdom.
There is no oil additive that will remove oil contaminants. They can add detergents to help keep the contaminants suspended so they do not impart wear on the engine, but if it is literally just an additive(added to normal oil, ie: the oil isn't designed with the high detergency), then I very seriously question its effectiveness.

I misspoke. I didn't mean remove but prevent/suspend any contaminants from the new engine from damaging it.
It is written somewhere in the user manual (yes I read it).

I recently posted that "my car is running great and is reliable" and poof... I burned a valve. Big ol' chunk of it broke off and obliterated itself in my #3 cylinder. Hopefully it'll be back on the road next week.

eh... Valves don't burn into pieces... If that's the way the mechanic explained it, he's either an idiot, trying to save himself a long explination.. or both.
should have replaced them a loooong time ago
i think the recommended is somewhere in the neighborhood of every 50-60k miles to replace them.
