'92 Camry, ~95,000

It's probably due for some work but I just can't bring myself to spend money on it.

-1987 Mitsubishi Mighty Max Sport - Carried 800+ lb. for 279,000 miles when it was rearended by an Arlington cop, out on 66. When I told my mom this she said "was he chasing you?" "Ha, no. It was a she".
-2001 Nissan Frontier supercharged crew cab - 56,000. They like to chase this one, but the cops are so young these days I can usually out fox em. Either on the highway or in court. Statement to Judge in one case: "My father and grandfather paid for these superhighways and I consider it my birthright to do 70+mph on them". Cool judge. Dropped the points and cut the fine in half. Told me never to show up in his court again. The ADA had an attitude that day, so the judge was teachin' her a lesson. Cost: $150+ costs. I considered this a win for 35 over.
-1985 Toyota PU My brother drove this for 269,000 miles. Hangin' out in the garage, the subject of oil change intervals came up. "Neal only changes his oil every 10or 12K miles." Reply from Neal: "Ha. Try 20K." Lunched a valve at 269K and sold it. Original driveline and clutch.

Damn heh, I realize that's probably what the manual says, but there's no way in hell I would ever leave break-in in for 5,000 miles on a new engine.. :Q <ANAL gearhead>If I spent the money for a new car, I would probably change it every 500 miles, have it analyzed each time, and graph engine wear. When it leveld off, I would know it was broken in and I would then switch to the normal oil regimen.. lol </ANAL gearhead>

Well, I figure I'll go by what the manual says - no use in wasting my money when it won't effect how long the engine will run. It actually says 5k miles if you push the car hard, 7k if you drive it normally :p It's a toyota, I'm not worried :p

I recently posted that "my car is running great and is reliable" and poof... I burned a valve. Big ol' chunk of it broke off and obliterated itself in my #3 cylinder. Hopefully it'll be back on the road next week.
eh... Valves don't burn into pieces... If that's the way the mechanic explained it, he's either an idiot, trying to save himself a long explination.. or both. ;)

I'm the one that's an idiot... I'm not explaining it properly to keep a long story short. Basically, a piece of my exhaust valve decided to take a vacation from the rest of the valve. There was a lot of carbon buildup on the rest of my valves. Car was under load, etcetcetc... yes, valves don't "burn" but mine more cracked and grenaded if you're looking for a better description.

Ahh. Damn, that's pretty rough. I wonder what would cause that, besides just simply a faulty valve.. improper valve lash, perhaps. Pounded itself to death.... maybe both.

Yeah, my 04 CR-V says that for "normal" driving, my oil changes should be every 10k miles! Every 5k miles for more "strenuous" driving. I have about 4k now, I'll probably get it changed around 5k.
