That car looks sweet! I have nothing against jetta's but my friend who has one says he gets a lot of flack for driving a "girls" car (not my opinion but others). I'm sure you wouldn't mind racing against someone who said that to you if you had that though :D

Haha...no I wouldn't. ;)

The thing is though, I don't really plan on racing it. I doubt I'll be taking it to the tracks and what-not. Which is a shame since it is a damn fast Jetta. The most I would do is tromp on it when I ricer wants to "play".

yes yes the old I'd never trade... :p I was a salesperson for 2 years sold Hondas/VWs/Olds:(/BMWs and the car that was in the most considering how many we sold was the VW then BMW then Olds and Honda.

trying to sell on the open market is difficult at best with a stock car with a street racer you have to wait for some young kid with a boner as he sees himself keeping up with kid at school that gets to borrows his dad's old IROC :) There is a very small market for cars like that in most areas. People hear tricked out or modded and a Huge majority wouldn't bother asking any other questions.

Cars are all ready a bad investment a tricked out car is even worse... just trying to help :p

Haha...uh, I don't think so....this thing isn't riced out one bit. It's damn fast!!

So the 18" wheels and body kit are purely functional then? ;) Don't buy a car from your brother... he can probably find some teenage kid whose parents will buy it for them.

Haha....ok, ok...maybe there is a LITTLE rice on it. But the performance mods make up for it. I wish he had kept it as a sleep though. That would have been killer!!

I haven't told the whole story. The car is almost ready to be repo'd. If I don't buy it it most likely will be repo'd. The car was my brother's but my grandfather took out the loan. Meaning it would ruin his credit. What I may do is buy, and then turn around and sell it...but I would want to get at least my money back for it.

Exman- thanks for the advice bud. I DO appreciate it. But I would like to say that there are many more people out there than teens who are into performance VWs. Go look at www.vwvortex.com.

the apr stage 3 is a very good kit, apr has just raised the price on that kit too, its pushes good hp but its also very safe hp, i've seen cars with this stg 3 setup spin the tires in 3rd gear in motion, its disgustionly sick, 22k does seem a bit high for the car tho, but since it is ur brother and u know he babied it, perhaps its worth it to you to pay the little more to know tha tthe car has been treated well.

as for all the guys who thinks jsut cuz a car is modded then its rice, you guys really need to grow up

Hmm... I'd say "buy" the car from him for the $17k he owes on it, then let him find someone who'll buy the car for whatever price he wants for it (22k as it happens)... he keeps the difference, whatever he can get someone to pay for it minus the $17k you'd get back. Then he ought to re-examine his priorities and spending habits. He put $15k into modding a car he hardly owned and couldn't afford? Not smart. But that's obvious to you and me. :)

EXACTLY muggs...we'll see what happens tomorrow when we get down to business. He's bull-headed and won't go any lower than 22k. He would rather not sell, get it repo'd and screw up out grandfather's credit than sell the car for less than 22k. And since I love my grandfather (he raised me since I was 13) I don't want to see that happen.

Pansyboy- He keeps jacking up the price. I was all set to buy it for 20k (which I think IS a good deal) but I think 22 is a little steep. I am definitely having 2nd thoughts since it is going to happen tomorrow. But man, every time I drive that thing my smarts go out the window. It is so redicously nice! On another note, I don't really know what he has all done to it. I know that WHAT he has done to it has been top-of-the-line products installed by the best people in town.

I'd never buy a car that's gone under the inevitable stress that this thing has gone under...unless it was my brother and I trusted him not to lie about it. With anybody else you don't know what the hell's been done to it, but if it is your brother's car and you don't question his honesty and it's not been driven TOO hard then I'd think on it.

What it's worth? damn hard to say - how many HP is it making now?

EDIT: Ah 300 HP. I'd be surprised if that amount of HP is capable of a low 13 1/4, but either way that's a lot of power. Assuming the upgrades were done well and the engine isn't going to destroy itself any time now it could be a good buy. I wouldn't expect great longevity out of it though. That's a LOT of extra stress on the internals.

Goodluck with the car, Sammy! It's not maxima, but new cars are always fun :D

It's a very nice looking car with great mods, but I thought it was more well-known that mods decrease the value of a car, not increase it. And before halik flames me like he flamed Xiety, he might want to learn more about this himself, maybe by talking to car dealers or professional car buyers.
Why do mods decrease the resale value of a car? A few reasons: (1) it greatly reduces the number of prospective buyers because most car buyers are not interested in a modded car, (2) the public perception is that mods reduce the long-term reliability of a car (which is mostly accurate) and it is the perceived reliability of a car that most influences its resale value, and (3) the public perception is that modded cars were previously owned by younger drivers who probably raced and/or thrashed the car.
Most car modders know that in order to acheive the best resale value on their car, the best thing to do is to remove the mods and sell them separately, and return the car back to stock for sale.

edit: how many miles on it?

Hey hey, thanks skoorb

as for a 300 horse jetta running low 13's....I think its pretty reasonable. I'm not an expert by any means but if a vr6 thats heavier and puts 170 to the wheels can run ~15ish I'd imagine a 300hp turbo that'll put traction to the road better could be well into the 13's. I think you'll have to buy it and find out :)

Off the mechanic! YAY!

I thought that he said the 300 was at the crank though and not at the wheels after the tranny has had plenty of time to rape some power out of it...? I'm using a 350 Z as a baseline. 287 HP at the crank and 14.3 1/4 It's a different platform than the VW (probably better for 1/4s), and is a full second above low 13s!

I wouldn't buy it.

Never ever buy OR sell a used car to a member of your family. It may end up being more trouble than it's worth. If I was an outside buyer, I might offer around 18K but that's only after a thorough checkup by the mechanic of my choice. :)

Dig that VW resale (you many have to enter your ZIP code).

I wouldn't consider paying a dime above $15k myself (edit: and that would be if it had ALL factory options)

As someone else advised, the best thing to do is probably to part it out and return it to stock to sell it. I can understand your brother wanting something out of the car he put 15k into, but frankly he should be happy to break even or only owe a little bit here.

Haha. You're a bit too excited. From my experience, VWs suck.
Our bug dropped it's tranny at under 100k miles. Quality, eh?

I'm with Vic on the effect of mods on the value. The car looks VERY nice, but I wouldn't pay extra for it compared to stock. If anything, I would hope to pay LESS due to the wear/tear and warranty ramifications.
