Dell monitors FTW though.

PC: build your own unless you want to deal with bad tech support. then you're your own tech support (well, you and anandtech :D)

laptop: IBM FTW. they're customer service doesn't suck, at all.

Though I still dislike Toshiba more than Dell. Toshiba makes it bloody hard to do ANYTHING to your computer. I couldn't even boot my friend's laptop from CD because it wouldn't recogize her external CD drive. Their tech support said you have to buy a toshiba branded external CD to make it work. But DOS + cd drivers fixed that. Gah.

I generally agree with you, except for a small part of PCs - when you want a cheap-ass budget unit, Dell is basically the best way to go. Laptop-wise, I would consider getting a Dell, but if I could get a lenovo I would probably get it - they still use IBM parts, as well as customer service.

since i upgraded it i have had nothing but problems with it

it currently wont even load into PCI-e properly

the tech support is about as helpful as any local 3rd grader would be having never once issued a lasting solution for a problem

hell one of their employees told me that putting in a more tha 350Watt PSU would overload the computer i wonder if he even knows what a watt is?

the reason i got this piece of sh17 was because my parents "wanted me to have a warrenty" which does me a whole lot of good since they'll never send anyone out to enforce it....free $$ for them i guess....

the first graphic upgrade i tried was a x600 XT from sapphire which was completly and utterly incompatible with my computer even though it was PCI express like my MoBo slot

now they're telling me my card that has run mostly fine for the past several months is incompatible(then how the ****** does it work for 7 months and just go poof incompatible)(is there a magical dell incompatibility fairy that waves a wand and makes every non-completly-overpriced-dell-licensed upgrade magically incompattible after a set time period?))

i've already steared every1 that i know away from the h3ll infested sh1th0le that is dell and after the non-stop problems this crap has given me i hopr u realize u should too......

on second thought they may not be bad..... if u never plan to upgrade ur PC but i dunno any1 who does such a thing maybe some1 whos rich enough to go buy a brand new PC every year or so or maybe a mac user they dont seem to like upgrades.....

another thing i noticed is that they sell mac edition graphics cards....AGP X800 XT for 350$ w00t theres a ****** bargain but seriously y are they selling Macintosh graphics cards?

it seems all of my dell brand pieces are total crap
......except the RAM i bet thats waiting another month or 2 to ****** out on me

both of my DVD drives work fine but they were made buy NEC and Sony and resold thru dell

also after trying to get a helpful solution out of one tec rep for literally an hour she just disconnected herself from me continuing awesome Customer service

im pretty sure if i space a customer who gave my store 1,500$ id get fired(not like india doesnt have 1.2 billion replacements ready)
[ /angry tired rant ]

Edit: guess not...BTW i also had to get a new mouse because the $5 dell optical mouse had tracking problems which just makes me love my RAZER copperhead even more

Edit 2: RAM is from Hundai not dell so its proably good

[ //angry tired rant ]
:Cliffs:::::

Dell sucks
Dell tech support sucks worse
I hate Dell u should too
now adding friends dont let friends buy Dell to my sig(half in tribute to the ATer who has a similar Sig regarding Intel)

My dell was dirt cheap, is reliable, quiet, and has not failed me once since I bought it.

Sounds like I had the same system as you, and I not only added 7600gt, but a x-fi, fill all the banks of ram, an extra optical drive....and it still works perfect.

Sure, you can't overclock them or tweak them as heavily, but for the price (assuming you get down on the frequent random sales) absolutely cannot be beat.

Dritnul, I just reread your original post - I now heartily conclude that you're a complete and utter dumbass.

Dell desktops are great if you don't mess with them. They're built specifically for the many millions of people who don't want to mess with their computers - and in fact I bought my 9100 because I knew I wouldn't be tempted to waste countless hours tweaking/OC'ing/modding it, and would instead be forced to actually use it to do things. It was also very cheap and came with a superb monitor.

Most Dell customers aren't going to buy a new computer every time a new processor comes out, because for email/web surfing/MS Office anything faster than say a 1.6gHz p4 is totally superfluous anyway. They'll just keep banging on it until the HD gives out or whatever, then they'll go back to Dell, buy another $400 computer, install the same academic copy of Office 2000 and whatever lousy program came with their 4-year-old digital camera, and it'll run pretty much like the last one. And they're happy, because they don't have any more interest in computers than you or I have in microwave ovens or window air-conditioning units.

umm actually 8400 is a step below XPS and above all their others at the time

btw thats only for dell MoBos that are partition MoBos they stopped doing that in the 8200 series if ud do more reserch u would have noticed this

I love my Dell Inspiron.. Tech support is incredibly easy to deal with. I dropped my laptop (tripped over the cord and it fell from the dining table to the ceramic floor). So I've had to replace a few things and each one has actually been a very pleasant experience. I love their warranty. I'm buying another laptop from them when the time comes.

My Dell Story:

April: purchased a 9150 at a good price

1) PC arrived and would not load windows. Tech call was horrific - involved several disconnects, incorrect routings, etc.... problem seemingly resolved (changed a bios settings?!) after 3 hours.

2) intermittant shut downs... problems seemingly resolved with by reseating RAM

3) intermittant shut downs continued... problem seemingly resolved by replacing RAM

4) would not power up. Dell agreed to replace the unit IF a mother board replacement (they agreed to pay for the labor on that) didn't work.

5) PC replaced in July

I'm happy now, but I essentially if I had know ahead of time that I would have have the troubles I had, then I wouldn't have bought it.

1. learn english
2. if you upgraded from an x300 to an x600, you shouldn't be messing around with the innards of your case in the first place

I've owned 2 dell comps and 3 dell monitors, done several reformats/upgrades to each and have never needed to call tech support.

So wait, after fiddling with your wiring, things are working as they should now?

I apologize if I misunderstood, your posts have a similar style to that of a chimpanzee high on PCP pounding on a keyboard.

dimension 8400 with added harddrive and upgraded 7600gs here and it's rock solid.

so don't blame dell just because you can't install a graphics card.

Don't get a Dell if you plan to upgrade any part of it at all. Many use propriety parts like motherboards that won't be compatible with off the shelf parts. They are great if you just want a cheap web surfing box though.

Only thing I would possibly be interested in from Dell is their 30 inch LCD monitor. I'd rather pay the extra $300 to get one locally from the apple store. I've concerned about dead pixels, whether it has them fresh out of the box or developing over time, but man that screen looked beautiful. Pity that the Apple wouldn't match my case color (black) like the Dell, but oh well.

Just to let you know, I haven't a single dead pixel on my Dell LCDs.

same here and we have about 260 19"FP here at my company. i have not seen one dead pixel at all. My 21" i have had for 2 years and its just as good as when i took it out of the box.

i love my 700m.. i had an issue with the battery.. it just died on me one day, so i called customer service, i got a new battery the next day.. my sister has the same laptop, and she has no problems with it..

my dad has a desktop.. it's a little slow, but it fits his needs.. if he wanted a gaming machine, i would have built it myself.. but since he just uses it for the internet and word and some occassional autocad, it works great and it was freakin cheap.. you definitely get what you pay for.. i would never consider a dell for a gaming machine..
