I still remember the release party for XP way back in 2001. It was a month after 9-11 and the country was in a dazed mood. The Microsoft people were all very upbeat and positive that they had something wonderful that they were releasing. They were right.

Wow was it really that long ago that it was released? Time sure goes by fast. I remember my high school had upgraded to brand new pentium 3's with windows 2000. Those things could fly! There were not as many BSODs when walking into the computer lab after the upgrade from win 98.

XP at the start was horrible though. So many driver issues, it was bloated for the hardware available at the time, and overall sucked, until hardware caught up and bugs got fixed. I think Vista was on the horizon by the time I upgraded to XP.

I would pay for them to get rid of it forever and not able to see XP ever again, dead OS so let it go.

I don't believe you. Nobody cares that much about such a thing that they'd willingly hand over their own cash!

I'm quite happy with 7, but already starting to worry about that going EOS.

Will certainly be skipping 8, 10 looks OK, but I'm apprehensive that we might end up with a subscription model.

Most of all though, I just find such upgrades a massive pain (and I'm not even a corporation!). It gets worse as I accumulate more and more stuff on the PC.

Back in the days of 95 to 98 one just had a few games (that one had pretty much played through anyway) and work-related programs. Now there's vast amounts of...stuff...to move, music especially. A zillion useful utilities, configuration files, lots of stuff I've probably forgotten about.

I suppose its the same as the inertia associated with getting old generally. Change gets more and more of a hassle (like moving home used to just involve stuffing everything into a rucksack, then a friend's car, then hiring a van...). The PC is now at the 'removal truck' stage.

why would you pay them to get rid of it forever because that would be a waste of your money. there was people saying the same thing about windows 8 not so long ago. i bet you that windows xp lasts longer than windows 8 lol ;)

Was sort of a joke, but yes I would give them a penny to get rid of XP for good ;) ,end of the day every OS has a limited life,XP time has been and gone, regardless of the OS in question ie Windows 7,8,10 etc they ALL have limited life.

Funny we have no issues upgrading hardware but when it comes to the OS ,some people cling to it like a sinking ship.

I got rid of XP back in 2007,almost a decade ago.

Upgrading not really an issue,I've all my important stuff backed up like you should, games well most of those are on Steam or Origin so you have cloud saves for most of them and it's not a hassle if you have a fast connection,as to old games well oldest one I've installed is 1997 game in Windows 8.1 via D-Fend ,http://dfendreloaded.sourceforge.net/ .

Win10 is not much different from Win8.1 with Start menu, yes I'll be upgrading but then always do and to be honest its very easy to adapt especially from 8.1 to 10.

As to subscription OS, very doubt Microsoft will do that for the consumer unless they want to kill off Windows.

Maybe if we all gave Microsoft a penny(only one penny) then they would kill off XP for good ,that's an idea ;) .

I actually jumped from 2K directly to Vista x64. I wanted my new C2D system to be able to stretch its legs, and not all the new hardware had 2K drivers... :)

Never looked back. Except at work... :D

I have 6 amd computers ranging from amd x2 to amd fx 4300 and amd fx 8350. they all run windows xp very very fast and i also have windows 7 with these cpus and experimented with windows 8. i actually downgraded windows 8 to windows 7 because hated windows 8. my original plan for windows xp was to use ubuntu 12.04 but after using it for 2 years with a computer i couldn't live with it so reinstalled with windows xp. i now have 4 computers using windows xp with a decent firewall and anti virus. have had zero viruses and zero trojans.

Windows 10 use growing as XP makes another slight jump

The fact that Windows XP has almost twice the number of users as Windows 8.x is a painful reminder for Microsoft of its failed experiment in reinventing the OS.

Don't read too much into that, remember XP has been around since 2001 so that is like fourteen years,Win8 almost three years.

End of the day I don't see the point clinging on to an obsolete OS like XP,plenty of better operating systems out there.

As to Win10 I know it'll be a very good OS since it builds on Win8/8.1 with refinements, how can it go wrong especially with the free offer?

I do understand that and i will try out windows 10 before i decide whether to keep it or ditch it. imagine if i do decide to ditch it and keep windows 7? i can see what will probably happen, getting people to upgrade from windows 7 will be an even bigger disaster than getting people to upgrade from windows xp. lol ;)

Some people are just stubborn and make mountain out of a mole hill ;) ,I give it five seconds before we see the first official Win10 moan , regardless even Win7 ends in 2020 so you have five years lean way before you will have to consider another new OS.

End of the day something nobody can avoid, and to think I have been doing this since DOS 6.22 days, where does the time go lol.

Actually I did not mean you, some people have valid reasons why they want to stay on an old OS like XP,others have poor reasons.

Good thing Linux is out there for another free alternative to Windows.

Funny thing about those xp users, the only os they will upgrade to is 7.
tldr, if you think the xp dynasty is legendary, 7 is going to go even stronger.

Why upgrade to an old OS,Win10 is the future and not far :).

Win 10 is not out there yet.

Having a choice of 7 or 8, many will prefer 7

I think that most people still on XP at this point are people who have a piece of proprietary software that doesn't work in Windows 7 or newer.

Odds are Linux isn't going to help them. If Windows XP compatibility mode in Windows 7 isn't going to do the trick, I highly doubt that something like WINE in Linux will do any better.

that choice might be made out of ignorance

if the hardware is compatible with it, Windows 8 will likely be better/faster with older hardware

just like with Vista, 8's poor reputation is wildly overblown, especially after each OS's major update(s).
