Win 10 is not out there yet.

Having a choice of 7 or 8, many will prefer 7

Nothing wrong with 8/8.1 I've used it since day one just like I did with Win7,all my games and software runs great,Win10 is obviously the way forward being the latest OS and out this year,Win7 is on borrowed time anyway compared to Win10,going Win7 is not the smart move this late in the game.

As to what people prefer well half of that comes from FUD which unfortunately is very ripe over the internet, half don't really know or understand what they want but just listened to FUD or hear say etc...

I think that most people still on XP at this point are people who have a piece of proprietary software that doesn't work in Windows 7 or newer.

Odds are Linux isn't going to help them. If Windows XP compatibility mode in Windows 7 isn't going to do the trick, I highly doubt that something like WINE in Linux will do any better.

I actually went from XP to Linux but that was way back in 2009 on one of my older PCs and yes still using Linux on that one, but then I know exactly what I want and need to use,Linux is an alternative providing as you stated you know its limitations.

I don't believe you. Nobody cares that much about such a thing that they'd willingly hand over their own cash!

I'm quite happy with 7, but already starting to worry about that going EOS.

Will certainly be skipping 8, 10 looks OK, but I'm apprehensive that we might end up with a subscription model.

Most of all though, I just find such upgrades a massive pain (and I'm not even a corporation!). It gets worse as I accumulate more and more stuff on the PC.

Back in the days of 95 to 98 one just had a few games (that one had pretty much played through anyway) and work-related programs. Now there's vast amounts of...stuff...to move, music especially. A zillion useful utilities, configuration files, lots of stuff I've probably forgotten about.

I suppose its the same as the inertia associated with getting old generally. Change gets more and more of a hassle (like moving home used to just involve stuffing everything into a rucksack, then a friend's car, then hiring a van...). The PC is now at the 'removal truck' stage.

What stuff? If you've used MS's default folders it isn't hard. I have a bit over a dozen programs that are easy to reinstall too. PC isn't that filled with junk and detritus.

Windows 10 use growing as XP makes another slight jump

The fact that Windows XP has almost twice the number of users as Windows 8.x is a painful reminder for Microsoft of its failed experiment in reinventing the OS.

i can understand that because tried windows 8 and didn't like it much so downgraded back to windows 7 which i am still using so i guess i must like windows 7 more. microsoft are going to have a very hard time getting me from windows 7 (1 pc) and windows xp (4 pcs) upgrading to windows 10.

Actually offering Win10 free for life if you upgrade within the first year to 7/8 users was a smart move, also as you know they have been trying different Start menus on Win10 so again they have listened to feedback, now if I'm honest my Win8.1 with Start menu is more or less same as Win7 but with added features,I avoid Metro for the most part since I boot straight to the old desktop, again some users make a mountain out of a mole hill(not saying you).

Regardless Win8.1 with Start menu or Win10 is just as easy to use as Win7 or XP or any Windows IMHO,as an old timer myself(over 50) I don't want things complicated so don't say that lightly.

I currently have two Linux PCs and two Win8.1 PCs unless you want to count my Android tablet and smart phone.

Last point the old pure desktop OS is a thing of the past,Win8.1/Win10 are the new future for Windows OS that covers it all ,regardless of your hardware or what you think of it.

So the old XP OS and even Win7 are really the last pure desktop OS you will see, things move on and change,OS adapts for new hardware and the future, way it is,you can't blame Microsoft for that, they own and have interests in a lot for things nowadays not just old legacy hardware like desktop PCs,as a desktop PC user and PC gamer myself I can understand that.

You haven't been around many Windows users, have you? I work with them for a living and I have been lucky to find anybody who actually likes it. Some vehemently protect their Windows 7 installations from upgrade or redeployment with 8. The complaints have simmered down after some time has passed and they became acclimated to the interface, but every time I poll them, they prefer 7. If you believe workstations will suddenly disappear in favor of tablets, I have a bridge to sell you.

I've been around many,I know a lot that use Win8 and happy with it,one even refused a Start menu because he prefers it without a third party one,yes he was using Win7 before then as well but had no issue making the transition to Win8.

I could also argue what people like is relative,ie does not make an OS bad because "user A prefers X to Y",again it's all relative,I know some that prefer XP to 7,again all relative.

As to how long I've been personally around well my first official computer was Commodore 64 then the Atari ST,Amiga A500 ,after that my first IBM PC with DOS 6.22,Windows 3.11 and virtually every Windows OS since then, let alone my Linux distros.

Problem with polls is most people don't like change and a lot are not tech savvy like we are here, they would stay on XP forever if they could, does that make Win7,8,10 bad?...Obviously not.

Btw I did not say workstation would disappear for tablets so don't put words in my mouth(with respect)...I said the OS is changing and the old pure desktop OS will not longer stay that way, every OS evolves, don't believe me then look at Windows 3.11 to Win10,you'll see what I mean.

I can understand why Microsoft have modernised Windows OS ie Win8/10,that is what I stated.

Btw I look forward to all the FUD yet again when Win10 is officially released, should be fun what crap some users come out with, some things never change with some people.

:)

A friend of mine had a Sinclair ZX81,black and white, no sound which got me interested in computers.

Hardware and OS has come a long way since then.
