All acquired taste foods.

I threw up the first time I had cheese but now I love strong cheese. I also love stinky tofu and thousand year old egg but I didn't like them initially. I've had many asians tell me that stronger bleu cheeses taste like armpit but grew to love it.

A lot of it is just what you grew up with. But people should really try the foods in question a few times before knocking it.

Again, much like the idea of most seafoods... why would anyone think a foot-long insect with claws would be edible? Why would some tribes eat tarantulas? It's all nasty and most likely began with necessity.

I hear some people also still eat insects of the sea.

you see fish = to insects?

I think he's referring to shrimps and lobsters.

Yeah but nobody rational ever ate a lobster raw or cooked and thought to themself "Hmm....you know what would make this thing REALLY good? Letting it sit out in the sun for three weeks until flies wouldn't even touch it, then feed it to a pig and remove it a half hour later while half digested from the pig's stomach and then freeze it and serve it ice cold over fermented bean curds."

The reality is Asians don't have taste buds.

that stuff is actually really good, believe it or not. Both xian ya dan (which is another, very salty preserved egg, not quite as scary looking) and Pi Dan (which is what is pictured in OP). Westerners are simply freaked out at the thought of it. I don't blame them, imagine coming from a far away village where people don't eat meat. Then they see the ground beef, burgers, fish, etc. that we eat. Must be a shocker. I mean, just think about cheese. Not nasty right? But if you really thought about what the hell cheese is (fermented milk), you'd be like wtf??? Definitely give the eggs a try ;).

I remember they made people eat these eggs on fear factor before, and people were literally crying they couldnt even stomach a little. I was thinking, goddamn, I could go on this show, eat 10 of these eggs, and whoop everyone's ass while winning $10,000.

The Wall Street Journal, describes the cheese as "a viscous, pungent goo that burns the tongue and can affect other parts of the body.

Sounds appetizing :) I wonder what other parts they are referring to..

The truth is that the majority of Chinese have been impoverished for most of history so you see these unlikely foods. Somebody fcked up their food but didn't want to throw it away and you end up with something weird like this. The legend is that somebody left duck eggs in a pile of lime or something and found the eggs denatured but they ate it anyway and found it to taste actually pretty good.

I myself don't like them. They often contain a lot of lead which is a big no-no. And the after taste is nasty, especially if you eat it with acidic food which results in a strong bitter taste, at least to my palette.
