I am in the same position as you, its a tough decision. I think I'm gonna go with the XBox though, due to its better lineup of games and hard drive stuff.

PlayStation 2 is my first choice. Right now, they have an awesome library of games. Metal Gear, Devil Man Cry, Silent Hill 2, Final Fantasy X, Gran Turismo 2, SSX Tricky... the list goes on.

The game I can't wait for is Final Fantasy XI Online. If you thought Phantasy Star Online was good, wait till this game comes out and kick A**

I think the X-Box is going to dominant the online console gaming industry down the line but right now the PS2 just has better games. If you are looking for longterm...meaning you are going to buy one system and nothing else for years.... X-box has the superor hardware and support. If you just want to fill your gaming appetite right now, PS2 is your choice.

eRrRrRrr--- decisions, decisions....
my friend just told me that he has a friend at sony who might be able to get me a PS2 discounted.... i'm thinking if he could get it for me significantly cheaper than $300 i might just get a PS2... . . . .

and SORRY! this post wasn't supposed to be a 'war'. It was supposed to just be a pro/con listing of the consoles.

Oh yeah... anybody know a GOOD and reliable sight that has the future PS2 and XBox games listed on them? That would be appreciated. Thanks.

My decision to buy a console is always determined by 2-3 games that i really want to play on that system. I don't have a Playstation 2 because I don't care as much about single player games as I used to because of MMORPGs and Counterstrike. But I would say definitely get a PS2...although it really should be $200 like the gamecube. The PS2 has Metal Gear Solid 2, Gran Turismo 3, Final Fantasy 10 (reason enough alone to buy this system) and future Final Fantasy games. What about Xbox? If all systems were the same price I would take a Dreamcast over a Xbox because I like its game library.

Just think about what kind of games you like and what is / will be available for each system. This doesn't always work though. Back when I was deciding between buying a Sega Saturn and a Playstation, I almost bought the Saturn because it had a superior RPG library, and Playstation had 0 RPGs. Now the Playstation has the best RPGs anywhere.

These threads are always full of fanboys for one system or the other flaming the opposing system without having done any research on either one. Anywho, I know a lot about the PS2 and I know everything about the Xbox because I have been following it for a long time. I say go with the Xbox.

Liq, I'd have to disagree on your 3Ghz requirement for a good emulation of the Playstation 2. The fact is you're running on the ol' Megahertz Myth still. Its the same thing as why would changing the brand of the motherboard that has nearly the same components ( or at least different components at the same speed ) can differ in overall system speed. It's just like how an Intel PIV 2.0Ghz can be slower than an AMD Athlon XP 1600+.

I can run n64 flawlessly on my 800Mhz computer. I can run SNES games while having large video files playing ( especially with divx decoding eating up a lot of processor power ) and play the games at normal speed.

Now XBox would be a different story, XBox's GPU designed by nVidia would just about require a high-end graphics processor because of the nature of the XBox's GPU. In most systems the processor does a lot of the work but in the XBox the processor runs the AI and other non-graphical computations. If there was an emulator for the XBox, it wouldn't require as much processor support because of the nature of XBox computations. It would require a GeForce III or higher ( since the XBOX GPU is in the middle of GeForce II and GeForce III ) to run it. If a emulator was able to send graphics processing to the GPU and CPU processes to the CPU for the playstation 2, I don't think it would require too high of a system to run it. It's all on the matter of how good the programmer is who designs the software.

We already have Dreamcast emulators (they may not be great, but they are getting there ). Who says Playstation 2 isn't next on the list or maybe XBox or maybe even the GameCube.

I'd have to go with XBox. The rest of the systems seem to have either no games that appeal to me or maybe one good game a year ( just like was said in this thread about XBox and Halo, it wouldn't be smart to buy it for ONE good game ).

Seriously though, threads like this make no sense. You want fact from people and all you get is their own opinion. I'd recommend you go to a site that you know isn't biased and see what they have to say for the systems. TechTV had a nice review on them ( even though they are owned by Paul Alan who is a Microsoft Executive ) and XBox did get 5 stars. They said the main cons of XBox were the large system ( doesn't matter if you're not going to move it ) and the controllers are still big. If you don't like the controllers but they still work, just wait for 3rd party controllers from companies like Mad Cat.

Some PS2 cons have been given in this thread as well as praises from fans. It's all upto whatever meets what your needs are. Hope ya get the right one!

Actually the NV2A chip for the Xbox is a custom GF3, so I dont know how you come up with the "inbetween Geforce 2 and 3" bit. If anything its between the GF3 and GF4.

Aikouka,

I think I was assuming the need for a 3Ghz processor if you are using brute force emulation. Obviously there are other methods which can be used to do proper emulation. My arguement is simply that the X-Box will not be emulated in a matter of months like so many people say, and argue as a reason not to buy the box. I do believe the X-Box will be emulated, but I don't think it will be emulated in such a short time. Additionally, do the Dreamcast emulators you speak of play original games? Or do they only play the ripped games? If they only play ripped games, then I would think it will be awhile before we can read X-Box games in our DVD-ROM drives. Even if getting ripped X-Box games becomes a possibility, the discs would be huge to grab (and its also ILLEGAL!), unless they come up with a method of ripping it yourself. I just think with all these things to tackle, GOOD emulation isn't a possibility for awhile.
