Thanks bro, I wasn't aware of my options :D

This card isn't for me. I'm a red ant. My GF is a green goblin, so I want her to get a next gen card too, else I'd pick up a GTX 580 once it hits <$400.

BUT, I got my fingers crossed that this card will be GTX 580 +/- 10% perf and I hope $350, even at $400 I don't mind.

The 480 is only about 20% worse than the 580 in the worst cases, and in a few comes within 10%. At ~$220 it's a pretty good deal. The only downside is at it's a power hog and runs hot compared to newer cards.

Rage on brudda. Its ok to sweat a little.

Yeah, I know - the GTX 480 isn't even a consideration for the GF. Her rig is on her desk, so at ear level.

That and the power draw issues. I'd rather get her a GTX 570 over a GTX 480, but overall I'd love to get her a GTX 580/GTX 670.

Depending on how this plays out, she'll definitely be getting one. Come on nVidia deliver! I'd love to order everything together (her parts with my parts) and then make a weekend of it.

The 7970 is available for ~$600 and the 7950 for ~$500 if you don't want to wait. Or pick up a gtx 480 that's two gens behind for $220 that will compete with a $500 7950.

The hd7950 and 7970 start out at $460 and 550 respectively, and the gtx480 does not compete with the hd7950; It's ~20% slower. It's also a discontinued part and can't be bought new at any major US retailer ... so I'm not entirely sure what exactly you meant with that post.

Sounds like a fun weekend.

I wonder when we will get to the point where the GPU just takes a direct power cable to the wall. Wouldn't this ease the load (figuratively and literally) on needing outrageously high wattage power supplies? Honestly I think I would prefer that over the additional clutter from 2 (potentially 3?) cables to the card internally.

No doubt! I'm be going all Largo on it and building it in the buff! No static charge yo!

Well how are the PSU companies suppose to stay afloat? Won't someone please think about the PSU's!

In stock for now.

That's a terrific price for an EOL card, similar to the ~$200 5870s from a while back. However, the heat and power give me pause.

Yeah its been in the Hot Deals section for a couple days now, first saw it on Slickdeals. It first started at TD, then Newegg matched the price, but now that they're sold out the only reliable option is TD again. It is a great deal, but I wouldn't be able to live with the cons.

Either way, I was just pointing to the fact that it is still available from US retailers...

nVidia could really shoot itself in the foot with all this hype. If Kepler isn't as big a jump as people expected then it could actually effect sales even if its performance beats AMD marginally.

I thought 28nm gpus would mean less power not more lol ;)

NV must have purchased stock in a number of PSU manufacturers. Old PSus that supported 'triple-SLI' not can just handle 2, and most normal PSUs that could handle 4 PCIE connectors can just run a single. If true, thats really dissapointing.

Three connectors would be 'acceptable' for a dual-GPU top-tier card though.

Just because you can buy a new model somewhere doesn't mean it's not EOL. The GTX 480 is EOL.

I didn't say anything about it being EOL. Even the quote I originally quoted from -Slacker- doesn't say anything about EOL. Discontinued != EOL, EOL parts are still available until stock runs out.

Actually, I'm sure everyone would argue discontinued == EOL. Just because something is discontinued doesn't mean they no longer have inventory in the pipeline, it means exactly what EOL does - no more being made.

holy crapple 6pin + 8pin + 6pin?
Holy crapple is right, I don't think my PSU has that many PCIe connectors.

I guess if I move the sofa I can put my desk against the wall and my PC into the fireplace. That should help with the heat some, going up the chimney rather into the room. In fact, it would be better. During the winter I never leave a fire burning when I go to bed, but I could leave the PC on.
