Saw this date mentioned at a few forums today, it's a Friday.
Didn't nV also push the Fermi release late on a Friday afternoon? Interesting.

A little under 3 weeks from now. so I'm guessing the shiny new hardware is in the hands of reviewers or is arriving this week. Would mentioning that they have the hardware be in breach of NDA?

I think it would be an NDA breach, yes.

It will have more memory (which will increase costs) and 28nm wafers are more expensive. Beyond those two variables, there will likely be an additional premium.

No way it'll be cheap cause JHH will give all of us a friend discount unlike Rory Read who is keeping all the money from 7 series sales for the company! Mr.Read doesn't care about the little people. :p

People actually think nvidia will save the day? They are worse on pricing than AMD is.

The hope is slower than a 7970 but cheaper, gtx580 for less money. Not many people can or will spend $550 for a card but want in on something new and right now the only option is $450 at a minimum.

I agree though, if the hope is for a card significantly cheaper, you need to temper your performance expectations. If it performs well enough, it will likely cost what a 7950 does. I hope reviews include GK110 info, I want to know how long the wait is for the card that will be faster than anything out right now.

Well right now AMD has no competition from NVIDIA. NVIDIA will force them to lower prices.

Not if they price them at the same price or even worse. Unless people only buy the nvidia's card and ignores AMD. Which isn't going to happen. Nvidia doesn't usually start a price war. Its been nearly always AMD starting the price drops.

For the target market the first iteration of Kepler is aiming for, it probably wont' matter, but at the same time it may just prevent Nvidia from taking the performance crown until "Big K" comes out.

The performance crown may be important but some can make the case that AMD has had the performance crown since the HD 5970. Yet, nVidia is doing fine and gaining share.

How much more?
Here's a shot of Tahiti:

The memory controllers border the left, top and right sides. Each 64 bit bus takes up some pretty decent space... perhaps 10mm²?

They probably can't say "we have the gtx670ti" but they can say "we have received some new hardware from nvidia but can't talk about it until march 23rd"

Not sure why you brought the health of Nvidia or marketshare figures into the discussion? I was talking the single GPU performance crown.

So a difference of 20mm² between GK104 and Tahiti? Do I have that right? Assuming the transistor density of each controller block is about the same.

even 1mm² is sufficient for many future disputes. Just sayin.

I think there is a schism between high end gaming gfx cards and actual games. Even if the new nvidia blows the 7970 out of the water, what game will actually make full use of it for you to really see any real difference?

One could arge that console ports do hold quite a few PC games back. In the not to distant future the next generations consoles will be comming out and hopefully they won't keep back PC gaming as they have done.

They will just over blow some resource hogging feature. Volumetric lighting, ambient occlusion, shadows, reflections, global illumination, etc... Just increase the number of calculations/sampling being used.

BF3 is just one of those games, enabling 4x msaa at 1080p could easily ask for 2x 7970s for the best experience and i see a few members here with 3x 7970s so there is a demand still.

Me myself i couldn't justify a second 7970 just for 4x msaa as a single 7970 with a heavy oc can handle 2x msaa with ease, even a moderate oc can.

Gamers with a higher then 1080p native resolution could use more kick as well.
