I thought there was mention that Wolverine had to wake up in the future for everything in the past to have really happened. That is, if he died, it would have been as if he never left. Kinda like forgetting to hit save on the Word document you've been writing for the last 2 hours.
So in that regard, the events in the future did matter right up to the point where Logan woke up.
I can't figure out how Neighbors had such positive reviews - for the immature humor frat boy genre of movies, it was a steaming pile of crap. Or, for analogy, Neighbors was to funny as Hangover 2 was to funny.
I think the problem is that you won't enjoy Neighbors if you don't like that specific type of humor. Seth Rogen movies seem to always fall toward the "Oh my god, did he really do that!? Haha!" style of humor. I like to think that it's very similar to British humor, which is usually comprised of someone putting forth this crazy idea or creating a crazy situation that is supposed to be inherently humorous because it's so out of place. I guess you could call it "awkward humor". Personally, I've found that I don't care for most of British humor, and because of that, it's not hard to guess that I don't care for most of Seth Rogen's stuff. Unfortunately, that didn't stop me from going to see the movie, and I didn't care for it either.
Frankly, I was pissed that we were subjected to
seeing fake Rose Byrn breasts! You shouldn't tease a man with the thought of getting to see such a cutie's bosom!
. Also, it didn't help that Zac Effron made me feel so inadequate.
So altering the past made X3 never happen, ok. But how is it then that Xavier is still alive in the alternate "dystopia" future when he was killed in X3? At that point the events of X3 hadn't been unwritten yet.
And for that matter, if that future where they had to send Logan back never happened, then how is it the changes he made altering the past would take hold? It seems like the catalyst for what drove the time hopping in the first place would have been eliminated, reverting the timeline tampering.
You're right in that Xavier dying in X3 was never really resolved. The extra-credit scene in that film hints that he "woke up" in the body of someone else, but that's really as far at that goes. There are theories that his mind was transferred to the body of his brain-dead twin brother, but that seems like kind of a stretch. It also doesn't explain why he's still in a wheelchair.
And I don't know where the extra-credit scene from The Wolverine fits in, time-wise. That's when Xavier and Magneto ask Logan for help in the airport. But that certainly didn't seem like some dystopian future with Sentinels everywhere. Also, sending Logan back in time was a last-minute decision, not the original plan.
Saw this film tonight, thought it was pretty entertaining.
I think any continuity issues between the first triology, and the "reboot" can be resolved by saying that the original actors were brought back more in a cameo sense versus trying to keep continuity. That is,
maybe Jean still died during Dark Phoenix in the new trilogy continuity after first class, but Xavier didn't. Therefore all events in X2 and X3 might not have happened but people still could have died which is why Logan was pleased to see them at the end after changing events w/ the Sentinals, etc
.
In any case, using the original (older) actors was a much better solution than trying to age the younger ones. And somehow Logan/Jackman looked even more ripped in this one versus the first one 14 years ago. That is insane.
I enjoyed it... only thing that bugged me was that they didn't explain how Kitty Pride was able to send people's minds back in time (obviously made more sense in the comics, as it was Rachael Summers, psychic extraordinaire doing the heavy lifting)
not a cinematic masterpiece or anything, but I don't feel like I wasted $10 on it.
I'm also disappointed that they didn't explain Xavier's appearance. I figured we'd get some explanation after the end scene in Wolverine. I know he transferred his consciousness at the end of X3, but the body looked nothing like him.
I think they ended up cutting a lot of scenes out of the film, so I'm hoping a BR version has an extended cut that fills in some holes.
Regarding the timing of the movie. IIRC, the end credits scene of The Wolverine takes place a couple of years after the actual movie. All we see is the airport with a Trask Industries commercial.
However, Xavier doesn't have a hover chair, just a regular wheelchair. Also, Logan has his adamantium claws in DoFP, whereas he lost them during the final fight scene in The Wolverine. I suppose it would be possible for Magneto to fix this, but there's no mention of it.
They did, I think, a poor job of filling in the gaps between movies.
I was actually expecting the sentinels to kill everyone at the end, including Wolverine. Especially after he was knocked out of commission by Magneto in the end. It was up to the First Class cast to solve the issues amongst themselves at the end and so it would have seemed fitting to kill everyone and let Logan's younger self take hold, since it didn't really matter anymore.
But I did love the final scene of Logan walking around the school like "WTF?!"
Finally, Quicksilver. No spoilers here really. After the outcry that happened on the reveal of the character and the stupid looking outfit, I have to say that he stole every scene he was in. And his attire worked perfectly for the setting.
I think somebody mentioned the tape. They established that if he's carrying something, like Magneto, then it moves at the same speed as him. So the tape would play "normal" for him.
I'm completely ready to accept these two different versions of the character. I think the XMen one will fit in perfectly with that and the Avengers one will work fine with that universe.

fwiw, I feel like Wolverine loses and regains his adamantium every 5 years in the comics.

I was annoyed that they were letting Kitty bleed out when they had two different mutants who could either had cauterized or frozen her wounds to stop it.

(Untagged this since the question and answer are not a spoiler for Days of Future Past)
Charles's consciousness transfers into a comatose patient at the end of X-Men The Last Stand.

In any event, the oldschool cast felt pretty neglected. They seemed pretty sidelined throughout the film,
only to be quickly killed at a scene near the end.
Great movie overall. Definitely had some plot holes & continuity problems with the previous films, but I guess if their objective was to re-boot the series, then I'm all for it.
I wish they made Colossus stronger. I can't recall one second of him actually doing any damage to a sentinel in his limited screen time. All other mutants (sunspot, iceman, warpath, blink, Bishop) all did some kind of damage. It's too bad that every X-men movie so far, Colossus didn't do any really bad ass stuff.
in that timeline, every mutant is branded with an M on their face... Bishop is just one of the ones who came back and has it. (there's at least one other that I can think of, but Bishop is the most well-known)

Saw it today with the wife, enjoyed it quite a bit. There were some plot points that made so little sense that I literally punched the child sitting in front of me (that is literally not true... also, I have trouble with the word "literally"), but it was entertaining, the action sequences were very well done, and it's what I expect from a good X-Men film. I put it up there in the list of good X-Men movies, joining X-Men, X2 and First Class. It's worth catching on the big screen, but it's not going to floor you the way the best superhero movies have.
