Doesn't matter. Your dad is teaching her the lesson that it's not worth rocking the boat to stand up for what's right.
This is something I am intimately familiar with right now, only in my case, my family stood up for a worker's right to worker's compensation when injured on the job. Little did we know what a hornet's nest it would open.

Instead, they're going to send the other person instead, because its her last year there (8th grade), and my sister is just coming along. WTFWTWFWFWTWEFWFWAFWAFWTSFWw
Is the principal of the school also a used car salesman? Pretty cheap tactics - if you ask me. :(

I don't quite understand his logic....

he said like that if i cause this trouble and stuff, that the principal would like hate my sister

aint that the typical asian parent response hehe

what do you mean by that?

I'm an asian and i don't tell my kids to shut up if somebody's aggrevating them. Nobody's kid is somebody's punch bag!! R U an asian and u raise your kids that way?

Something like this happened to me in 4th Grade... I got third in the school Geography Bee cuz they told me to name four states that bordered Tennessee and they claimed that Missouri wasn't one of them... I brough in my Atlas from home the next day and proved them wrong... so there was a re-do and I finished first in the school, so they made the girl that won the first time and me co-winners... that showed them!

As I've said several time before when it came to racism against Asians, it's up to you to fight your own battles. You need to tell your old man why it's so important to fight this blatant bias against your sis. Who knows, perhaps they're thinking exactly what your old man is thinking: the chinese won't make any noise because they don't want any trouble. If you let this go, it'll be the beginning of the end as far as respect is concerned (for your family) at that school.

it's not right to have a Chinese kid to win a spelling bee. That's why they chose other one who was a white one. hahahaha, j.k.

Seriously, think about the outcomes if you decide to sue the school. Try to forget and forgive if you can. We all know that life's unfair. Although your sister is not declared by the school as a champion, but everyone and herself know that she is a true champion. That's what you should tell your sister. But you should ask your parents to talk to the school. If they are sincere and have good reasons about it. Just let it go. I'm sure that "because its her last year there (8th grade)" is not the legitimate reason. Maybe the principle or someone at the school is friend of that girl's family.

If you sue them...
Your sister will learn a lesson of suing everyone when she feels unfairly treated as we have seen too many of them nowadays. Also, after the lawsuit, everyone will not treat your sister the same anymore and you would move your sister to a different school.

my parents are both chinese immigrants, and they would raise hell over something like this. if she were my child, i'd transfer her to a different school, then complain loudly and make the principal kowtow to me.

Your two cents, and that's all it's worth. Don't listen to this guy. Like Gopunk said, make this situation heard and bring it up everywhere. Let them feel feel ashamed.

When I was in the 4th grade, we had a spelling bee, and I won. That friday We were suppsoed to have some awards things for the top 3 people, and i was going to get ice cream and stuff.

They cancelled my awards ceremony to give a pizza party to the class that brought in the most money for some fund raiser.

Pissed me off. They still owe me ice cream. :|

i'm not saying that my sister should be the champion, but that there should be a rematch. And i really dont want to sue, i dont even want to have that option because i went to that school, and almost all the teachers know me there and would support me on this issue

Tell you dad that if your family doesn't put up a fight this will tell the school that it's ok to mistreat Asians. Who knows what your school will think of next. They might even mistreat other Asians who show up at your school after your sister graduates.

Standing up for yourself is not without risks. But there are also risks with not doing so.

Lucky she will learn about life in the real world. Sometimes, no matter how good you are at what you do, someone else gets picked.

Why does everyone assume that the principle is doing this because she's asian? It might be that he's simply an asshole, and playing the race card would only hurt you. Anyways, if she cares about it, raise hell, if not, let it die. I understand the principle behind it, but I wouldn't fight a battle I don't care about simply out of principle. I'd save my energy for something that really mattered.

i just talked to her about it few minutes ago. This is one of the things she said, "I think its unfair."
