.89 cents/gallon and that was common in that area

hehehehe

it would either be 89 cents a gallon or $0.89 / gallon.

.89 cents > 1 cent. ;)

anyway, that's not why i was quoting you. i quoted you to say, 8 yrs ago, 89 cents / gallon was the norm in NJ also. NJ as expensive as it is to live here has surprisingly low gas prices.

even now 2.29 is not uncommon. i've seen 2.23 and 2.26 in NJ.
.89 > 1? Go back to gradeschool, geez.

get a sense of humor.
Misuse of comparison operators is no laughing matter. I once bidded on alot of stuff on ebay because of the incorrect use of one, and it costed me a rediculous fortune. The seller said there not responsible and ebay said the same thing, to.

sorry, we needed acheap gas thread, so as to offset all the prior Expensive gas threads.

OP thinks $2.13 for gas is cheap. Brainwash successful.

Still $2.69 down here in New Orleans for regular.

Still $2.60-$2.70 around here for regular. And that's if you know where to look. I still frequently see prices in the $2.80 to $2.90 range for regular, and amazingly people still go to these gas stations...

Yay, a cheap gas thread.

I filled up today for $2.18/regular.

For the record, oil companies' third quarter profits were up 65%.

what was gas PRIOR to the hurricanes? it wasnt much less, and people said Lutz was nutz when he said $2 a gallon would be reached again.

I remember in the summer of 2004 in my area it was steadily climbing. Around that time it was about $1.75-$1.90 depending on how far I was willing to drive to fill up. Before that, "normal" prices in my area that had remained relatively consistent for as long as I can remember were around $1.40-$1.60 range. I think the only reason it's dropping so much right now is because congress is holding the oil barrons feet to the fire over their insane profits. Exxon Mobil posted the single biggest corporate quarterly profit in HISTORY last quarter! And that's not just in THEIR history but as I understand it the biggest quarterly profit of ANY corporation. Soon as the CEO's grease all the right palms and manage to squirm their way out from under this current congressional inquisition, prices will shoot back up again.

you are so right

Yes, but they had only a ~10% profit margin which is where they usually are historically. There are other companies that run higher margins than that.

Also, most of the oil companies didn't meet analyst's expectations causing their stock price to drop despite the "windfall profits".

I heard the profit margin was around 7% which is actually low for the oil sector. When you look at profit margins, Pharmaceuticals are the true robber barons with margins around 18%.
Of course, my average turn around for a hot deal on ebay is around 50% but thats another story :)

I think one was at 9.something percent and another was ~7%.

Citigroup is another company that had 18% profit margins.

Thought I'd post the following excerpt.
Leading the pack was ExxonMobil, the world?s largest oil company. Exxon reported third-quarter profits of $9.92 billion, 75 percent higher than its third-quarter earnings last year and the largest quarterly profit ever reported by a US company. The company also boasted revenues of more than $100 billion, another US record and a 32 percent increase over the company?s revenues in the second-quarter.

The Wall Street Journal on Friday noted that Exxon?s profits amounted to nearly $75,000 a minute, every minute, for the entire three months of the quarter (July, August and September). Exxon?s profit for the first nine months of the year, more than $25 billion, already exceeds its annual profit last year. The company made more money in the third quarter than all but eight companies in the S&P 500 made in all of 2004.
